HARTSVILLE, S.C. - After suffering three straight setbacks to
begin the season, Anderson University women's tennis earned its
first win of the season with a 9-0 shutout of South Atlantic
Conference newcomer Coker Saturday afternoon at the Coker Tennis
Courts.
The blanking is AU's first 9-0 win since defeating nonconference
opponent Converse on April 14, 2013 and snaps a four-match losing
streak, dating back to the 2013 season.
With the match beginning with the singles round, five of the six
Trojans won in straight sets as junior Lindsay Gregory and
sophomore Nikkola Wichenko posted 6-0, 6-0 victories at No. 4 and
No. 5, respectively. Sophomore Alexandra Ebner missed matching
Gregory and Wichenko's score by dropping a single game in the
second set, but cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot.
Senior Karen Ching earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 1, while
sophomore Lauren Howard claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 6
position in her first appearance of the 2014 season.
In the doubles round, Anderson swept the Cobras without dropping
a game in all three positions posted an 8-0 victory.
The Trojans continue SAC play on Sunday when they return to the
Max Grubbs Memorial Courts to face Tusculum. That match is slated
for 1 p.m.
