ANDERSON, S.C. - With five players in double figures and
shooting its best percentage of the season, Anderson University
women's basketball remained perfect on the campaign with a 74-69
victory over Lincoln Memorial in South Atlantic Conference action
Tuesday evening at the Abney Athletic Center.
Juniors Jasmine Franklin and Jennifer Monroe each tallied 13
points on the evening, as they combined for 11 made field goals.
Sophomore forward Alexis Dillard dropped in 11 points on a 5-of-6
shooting performance, while seniors Sierra Simpson and Lesley
Woods, who came off the bench, added 11 and 10 points
respectively.
As a team, Anderson, which improved to an unbeaten 3-0 record on
the year with a 2-0 mark in league play, shot 49.2 percent
(31-for-63) for the evening, marking the highest total by a
Garrity-led Trojan team since a 97-58 victory over Mars Hill on
Feb. 17, 2014 (55.7 percent). The Trojans also connected on six
3-pointers, as Woods and junior Madison Floyd combined for five.
With her three treys, Woods moves in closer to Amy Davidson
(2000-03) for fifth place on the all-time 3-pointers made list in
program history.
In the opening seven minutes of action, the Trojans jumped out
to a quick nine-point lead, capped off by a traditional three-point
play by Nakia Young, pushing the score to 20-11. The 3-pointer
followed by the free throw were Young's only points of the evening.
Following the free throw, LMU answered by bringing the score within
five when Railsplitter Aisjah Lee sunk a jumped for two of her five
points for the contest.
After Roan followed the field goal with a free throw, the four
points would be the closest the visitors would come as AU took its
first double digit lead when Monroe scored on a fast break layup,
increasing the Trojan lead to 27-17 with 8:18 remaining. Clinging
to their third 10-point lead in the final five minutes, LMU scored
four of the final five points of the half, as Anderson took a 36-29
lead into the halftime break.
After the Black and Gold scored the first two baskets to begin
the second half, Lincoln Memorial began to slowly cut into the AU
advantage. With a nine-point lead with 13:47 remaining, LMU began a
quick 6-0 run beginning with a trey from Katrina Ottesen and
followed by a lay-in from Stephanie Smith. With the score at 50-47,
Floyd, who saw her first action since the season-opener, drained a
3-pointer, giving AU a six-point cushion.
Despite the lead, the Railsplitters once again managed a
comeback, moving the score to 59-58 with 7:17 remaining as they
score six unanswered points beginning at the 8:50 mark. Facing
their smallest advantage of the contest, the Trojans answered when
Woods and sophomore Heather Jankowy managed to sandwich 3-pointers
around a Megan Pittman lay-in, sending the score to 66-60 with 5:43
remaining.
Following the Jankowy trey, LMU's Lee committed an offensive
foul, handing the ball back to AU. On the ensuing possession, Woods
drained her final trey of the game, putting the home side ahead,
68-60, with just over five minutes to play.
Despite Lincoln Memorial scoring the final five points of the
contest, Anderson held on to the five-point victory, snapping a
two-game regular season winless streak against the
Railsplitters.
Lincoln Memorial was led by Smith, who is one of the tallest
players in the SAC standing at 6-foot-5, with 15 points and seven
rebounds. Pittman tallied a double-double with 10 points and 12
rebounds, while point guard Kiara Rawls scored 10 points. Forward
Kortnay Cox pulled down 11 rebounds, including seven on the
offensive side. For the game, LMU shot 34.8 percent (23-for-66) and
made four 3-pointers.
Anderson returns to the court on Saturday when it steps away
from conference play and heads down I-85 to face nationally-ranked
Limestone. Tip-off from Gaffney is scheduled for 2 p.m.
