GREENWOOD, S.C. - Despite a second half goal by defender Faith
Johannes, Anderson University women's soccer could not find an
answer for a heavy Lander attack, as the Trojans fell, 7-1,
Wednesday evening in nonconference action at Van Taylor Stadium at
the Jeff May Complex.
With the setback, the Trojans move to 4-7-1 on the season as
they enter the weekend on a four-match winless streak. On the
opposite side, the Bearcats improve to 5-2-3 on the season as they
return to their Peach Belt Conference schedule on Saturday.
Lander used five second half goals to earn the victory as it
also claimed the shot category, 18-7. Four of AU's seven shots came
on goal as Johannes paced the team with two shots on goal.
Sophomore Paige Gowans-Smith and freshman Kristin Herbert rounded
out the category as both players fired on goal once.
After the hosts scored twice in the opening 45 minutes, Lander's
Kimberly Kesler added her second goal of the evening in the 47th
minute, handing LU a convincing three-goal advantage.
Following the second-half goal, Johannes added AU's lone tally
of the match as she fired a shot from 30 yards away past Lander
goalkeeper Katie Lyle. For Johannes, the goal was her first of the
season as she becomes the eighth different Trojan to score this
season.
After the Johannes goal, Lander netted four more goals headlined
by Kesler's hat trick in the 70th minute when she received a pass
from teammate Victoria Lange. With the hat trick, Kesler has scored
seven goals on the season to lead the team.
"I'm very disappointed tonight, but it's probably just a game
too far for us at this point," Anderson head coach Ciaran Traquair
said. "We will regroup and go again at LMU and hopefully be able to
give ourselves a chance of chasing that third conference
victory."
Anderson returns to the pitch on Saturday when it hits the road
to Lincoln Memorial for a South Atlantic Conference showdown.
Kickoff from the Volunteer State is slated for 1 p.m.
