ANDERSON, S.C. - Untimely miscues proved costly as the Anderson
volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (19-25, 27-29, 25-22, 22-25) decision
to Northwood at the FSC/Terrace Hotel Classic, hosted by Florida
Southern Saturday morning at Jenkins Field House.
Northwood (Mich.), the defending GLIAC Champions, improved to
2-1 on the young season, while Anderson slipped to 0-3.
"I thought the team fought hard and is growing into a great
team," said Anderson head coach Craig Mosqueda. "I was really
impressed with our resiliency as they fought back several times
after getting behind."
The contest, which was closer than the final score indicated,
saw unforced errors plague both teams throughout the four-set
match.
The first set saw the Trojans take an early lead, but the
Timberwolves battled back to take a 14-11 lead. AU climbed within
just 16-14, but was unable to overtake Northwood, as the
Timberwolves closed the frame with a 9-5 run to claim the set.
The second set featured 18 ties and nine lead changes, with the
largest lead being two points by either side. AU claimed an early
6-4 edge but the Timberwolves capitalized on AU miscues to take a
one-point, 10-9 advantage. The back-and-forth battle saw both teams
take brief leads before Northwood took the narrow win.
AU overcame a slow start to win the third set after the
Timberwolves scored the first five points of the frame and raced
out to a 6-2 lead. But Anderson chipped away and climbed within
6-4, before Northwood pushed back out to a five-point lead (9-4),
only to see the Trojans take their first lead of the set on the
strength of a 8-1 outburst and claim a 12-10 edge. The Trojans
snapped a 15-15 tie with 3-1 surge ignited by a kill from junior
Hailey Pittman, and AU held a two-point edge on five occasions in
the final moments before closing the set by scoring three of the
final four points to gain the set victory.
The fourth frame again saw seven tie scores before Northwood
snapped a 15-15 tie with five unanswered points, as the
Timberwolves held on for the win.
Junior Shannon Gillespie notched her second double-double in as
many days, leading the Trojans with 16 kills and added 11 digs.
Pittman notched 12 kills, while junior Meghan Cautero dished out 36
assists. Defensively, junior Alix Hooker recorded a team-high 15
digs, while Priscilla Irizarry chipped in 11 digs.
Anderson gets back in action quickly, when the Trojans square
off against nationally No. 2 ranked Tampa in AU's final match of
the Classic. First-serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
