ANDERSON, S.C. - Anderson guard Sierra Simpson's traditional
three-point play with 11 seconds remaining lifted, the Anderson
women's basketball team to a 57-55 win past Lincoln Memorial in
South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon at the Abney
Athletic Center.
Anderson (17-7, 11-3 SAC) swept the season series past the Lady
Railsplitters and stayed atop the league standings with its second
straight win, while Lincoln Memorial (13-11, 6-8 SAC) had its win
streak halted at three.
The Lady Railsplitters had rallied from a 52-47 deficit on the
strength of an 8-2 run over the final five minutes to claim a brief
55-54 edge on a layup by junior guard Kalasia Green just moments
before, but Simpson dropped in a driving layup - her second basket
of the afternoon - and added a free throw after drawing a foul.
Green managed a desperation shot before the buzzer but missed
the mark as AU claimed the Senior Day victory.
Anderson's Alissa Diaz led all scorers with 24 points on 9-of-16
shooting from the field, while adding a game-high four assists and
recorded three steals. Senior guard Amanda Parris added 15 points
on 5-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc and swiped five steals.
Senior forward Breonda Shannon recorded a team-high eight rebounds,
while Tilde Ahlin pulled down seven boards.
Green finished with 15 points to lead the Lady Railsplitters
attack.
Neither team led by more than eight points in a contest that
featured eight ties and 10 lead changes.
Trailing 13-8 at the 11:16 mark of the opening half, Diaz scored
nine of her points in a five-minute span to fuel a 12-3 run by the
Trojans. Parris also added one of her game-high five 3-pointers
during the outburst, as AU took a 20-16 lead.
But Lincoln Memorial responded with eight unanswered points to
take a 24-20 advantage at intermission and scored the first four
points of the second half to push out to a 28-20 lead inside the
first two minutes.
The Trojans refused to surrender, outscoring LMU, 13-5, over the
next six minutes to knot the score for the fourth time of the
afternoon at 33 apiece, and neither team led by more than two
possessions over the final 13 minutes.
Anderson will get back on the hardwood Wednesday at Wingate.
Tip-off versus the Bulldogs is slated for 6 p.m.
