ANDERSON, S.C. - After starting slow for the second straight
game, Anderson University women's basketball stirred a first half
comeback and cruised to a 90-54 victory over Brevard in the team's
South Atlantic Conference opener Wednesday night at the Abney
Athletic Center.
The victory marks AU's fifth straight after beginning the season
with a heartbreaking 61-59 loss at USC Aiken. The win also marks
the first time an Anderson (5-1, 1-0 SAC) team has reach 90 points
since a 90-57 win over St. Andrews on Feb. 13, 2010 in AU's last
season in Conference Carolinas. The rout also gives head coach
Jimmy Garrity his first win in the SAC.
For the second time this season, every player who dressed played
more than 10 minutes with just one player, redshirt junior Emily
Willoughby notched over 20 minutes played (21). With the minutes
spread throughout the roster, every player also got on the score
sheet, as sophomore Jennifer Monroe led the offensive explosion
with career-highs in points (18) and rebounds (10), becoming the
second Trojan this season to post a double-double.
Also recording a career-high was junior Jaclyn
Moore, dropping in eight points, while junior Jasmine Franklin and
freshman Alexis Dillard added 10. Willoughby, who was 2-of-6 from
3-point range, closed the game with 12 points.
AU's starting lineup did not see a lot of time in the second
half, as Anderson's bench saw its most time of the season.
Willoughby, Moore and freshmen Heather Jankowy and Nakia Young all
posted season-highs in minutes played, highlighted by Young's five
points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals.
"I was really proud of the way our team came out and played
tonight," Garrity said. "It was a great team effort."
Similar to Monday night's game against USC Aiken, the Trojans
got down early, facing a seven point deficit at the 14:10 mark when
BC forward Shelby Wolfe knocked down a jumper. AU responded quickly
with back-to-back threes from junior Lesley Woods and Floyd. With
the momentum slowly going in favor of the Trojans, Anderson would
take its first lead at 22-21 since the 19:49 mark when Franklin
dropped in a layup with 7:51 left in the opening half.
From there, the Trojans added a 7-0 run and would eventually
take their biggest lead of the half when Monroe grabbed a rebound
off a Franklin free throw and banked in a shot with just a second
left on the clock, beating the halftime horn. Despite the missed
free throw, Franklin would carry a game-high 10 points into
halftime.
Anderson jumped out to a 10-0 run to begin the second half,
headlined by back-to-back 3-pointers from Willoughby to cap off the
run. A layup by Moore at the 2:21 mark would give AU its biggest
lead of the season of 44, as BC would be able to cut into the
Trojans lead, finalizing the score at 90-54.
The 36-point deficit is the largest win over Brevard since
joining the SAC in 2010, beating the previous mark set last season
with a 56-40 win. The victory also marks AU's largest win since the
2008-09 season when the Trojans defeated St. Andrews 103-63 on
March 1, 2009.
Brevard (0-2, 0-1 SAC) was led by junior Taylor Hiatt with 14
points and three rebounds, while freshman Chelsea Turner pulled
down five rebounds.
"Brevard came out and played with a lot of confidence and
energy," Garrity said. "They gave us problems early on but we did a
great job settling down and playing our type of game. It was a
great conference win."
Anderson continues SAC play on Saturday when it heads to
Lenoir-Rhyne. Tip-off with the Bears is set for 4 p.m.
