ANDERSON, S.C. - Juniors Kelley Lacey, Meghan Cautero and
Shannon Gillespie each posted double-doubles, but it was not
enough, as Anderson committed a season-high 30 miscues and dropped
a 3-1 (18-25, 21-25, 25-16, 17-25) decision to Mars Hill in South
Atlantic Conference volleyball action Friday night at the Abney
Athletic Center.
"We played our game in the third set," said Anderson head coach
Craig Mosqueda. "We were aggressive and played great defense then.
Kelley (Lacey) did a great job for us all night. Mars Hill did a
good job of keeping us out of our system and we couldn't keep the
momentum from that third set."
Anderson (5-6, 4-2 SAC) had win its win streak halted at four
and suffered its first home setback of the season in four matches,
while Mars Hill (8-4, 6-2 SAC) won its sixth straight contest.
Mars Hill never trailed in the opening set, as the Lions took an
early lead and held off AU despite repeated rallies by the Trojans.
MHU never led by more than two points until late in the frame and
posted a 5-1 run that turned a one-point advantage into a 21-16
lead and the Trojans were unable to recover.
The Lions posted an impressive .342 hitting percentage in the
second set, as they scored the first four points of the frame. AU
battled back to even the score at six apiece, but Mars Hill went on
another 5-1 surge to gain some separation. Again, the Trojans
refused to surrender and stayed within striking distance before
chipping away to knot the score at 18-18 on a kill by Gillespie.
Anderson evened the score again, at 20-20, on an error by the
Lions, but MHU snapped the tie on a kill by senior Toni Cole and
went on to claim the set.
The Trojans came alive in the third frame, with a pair of Mars
Hill miscues giving AU a 6-4 lead. With the score even at 7-7,
freshman Tinsley Hallman knocked down one of her seven kills on the
night to give Anderson a lead it would not relinquish. The kill
ignited an 11-2 outburst by the Trojans as they pushed out to an
18-9 lead. Mars Hill pulled within six, but would get no closer, as
middle blocker Hailey Pittman closed the set with a
kill.
The fourth set saw the Trojans jump out to a quick 5-2 edge, but
Mars Hill climbed back to snap a 6-6 tie with a 9-2 surge and AU
was unable to rally, as the Lions opened a late double-digit
advantage en route to the victory.
Lacey finished with a career-high 15 kills and 24 digs for her
second double-double of the season, while Gillespie tallied 14
kills and 23 digs for her sixth double-double of the campaign.
Junior Alix Hooker posted a match-high 25 digs and Cautero notched
her fourth double-double with 45 assists and 10 digs.
Marissa Wixom led all players with 17 kills, while reigning SAC
Player of the Week Toni Cole and MaryKate Griffin each added 13
kills. Teammate Courtney Worthington, the reigning SAC Specialist
of the Week, shared match-high honors with 45 assists. Victoria
Kaiser and Maggie Murphy posted 23 digs apiece for the Lions.
Anderson faces another conference challenge on Saturday, as
Tusculum invades the Abney Center for a 2 p.m. first-serve.
