ANDERSON, S.C. - An 18th minute goal by freshman Tera Dolan was
all Anderson University women's soccer needed as the Trojans
defeated Emmanuel College 1-0 Wednesday afternoon at Trojan
Stadium.
Dolan headed in a cross from classmate Paige Gowans-Smith, who
sent a corner to the back post where she found the charging Dolan.
Dolan knocked in the goal for her second tally of the season to
eventually give Anderson its third win of the season.
Along with Dolan, the offense shined in the defensive third for
the majority of the match as the Trojans outshot the Lions 26-7, as
16 of AU's 26 shots troubled EC's goalkeeping duo of Breanna
Grizzle, who played the opening half, and Cyara Castillo, who
finished the match. The shot spree was balanced as Anderson tallied
14 shots in the opening period and 12 in the final 45 minutes.
Leading the way in the shots category was freshman Helena Moore
and senior Krystal Goss, who posted eight and seven shots,
respectively. Goss led the team with five of her shots coming on
goal. Dolan and classmate Emily Perez each notched three shots,
while Gowans-Smith and senior Olivia Scalzitti each had two.
Senior Kaitlyn Neipp made three saves en route to the shutout,
to give her 3.1 shutouts on the year. For her career, Neipp moves
to 19.4 shutouts, two clean sheets away from moving into seventh
place in the all-time South Atlantic Conference career shutout
list.
With the offense wanting to attack throughout the match, the
Trojans were called offsides an unprecedented 16 times. The stat
was AU's highest total of the season.
"I'm very proud of our girls for working to get a win today,"
Anderson head coach Samar Azem said. "Emmanuel's goalkeepers had a
great game and made some phenomenal saves, but it was nice to see
our team piece together a solid attack. It was a refreshing step
for us and we will build off this into the weekend."
AU jumps back into SAC action on Saturday for Homecoming, as the
Trojans host Lincoln Memorial. Kickoff from Trojan Stadium is
slated for 1 p.m.
