ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson volleyball team opened its longest
homestand of the year by sweeping longtime rival Erskine, 3-0
(25-13, 25-17, 25-19) in nonconference action Tuesday night at the
Abney Athletic Center.
"We played well again tonight," said Anderson head coach Craig
Mosqueda. "Our ball handling was great and it was a good win.
Shannon (Gillespie) had a fantastic night. We tried to mix up the
lineup some tonight. It was wonderful to see all the fans in the
stands and to get a point for the Beville Cup. We are looking
forward to this weekend."
Anderson (5-5) improved to 3-0 at home en route to winning its
fourth straight match. The Trojans have recorded three consecutive
sweeps past Erskine (3-9) at the Abney Center, while the Flying
Fleet suffered their second straight setback and are still seeking
their first road win in five outings this season.
The Trojans scored the first seven points of the opening set and
never looked back as they jumped out to an early 10-2 lead. AU
capitalized on back-to-back errors by the Flying Fleet to push out
to a double-digit 15-5 cushion and maintained the advantage through
the remainder of the set.
Anderson claimed an early lead in the second frame, as well, and
used an 8-0 outburst to gain an 18-7 advantage on a kill by
Gillespie. Erskine climbed back within seven on five occasions, but
could get no closer, as AU freshman Jessica Harris closed the set
with an emphatic kill.
The Trojans utilized a 10-1 run in the third set to turn an 8-7
edge into an 18-8 double-digit lead. The Fleet battled within five,
at 21-16, but AU answered with four of the final seven points to
claim the win.
Gillespie finished with a match-high 18 kills, while adding 16
digs, for her fifth double-double of the season. The Fishers, Ind.
native committed just one error in 35 total attempts, posting a
season-best .486 attack percentage. Junior Hailey Pittman tallied
seven kills, while freshman Tinsley Hallman notched six, with
Harris and Kelley Lacey recording five kills apiece. Junior Meghan
Cautero handed out a match-high 24 assists, while freshman
Priscilla Irizarry chipped in 10 assists. Junior Alix Hooker
recorded 15 digs.
With the win, Anderson captured another point in the Beville Cup
competition and leads Erskine 3-0 in the standings.
Anderson will look to look to extend the win streak as the
Trojans get back into South Atlantic Conference action by playing
host to Mars Hill on Friday. First-serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at
the Abney Center.
