ANDERSON, S.C. - Junior guard Chandler Hash scored a career-high
32 points, including 18 in overtime as Anderson defeated Newberry,
105-95, in double overtime in South Atlantic Conference men's
basketball action Wednesday night at the Abney Athletic
Center.
Anderson improved to 7-4 overall and 3-0 in league play by
snapping a three-game skid and has won four consecutive games past
Newberry, which fell to 5-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
The Trojans and Wolves battled into two extra periods for the
second time in as many meetings, after Anderson held off Newberry
in double overtime in the semifinals of last season's conference
tournament.
Anderson showed little ill effects of a three-week layoff, as
the Trojans opened the contest with a 12-1 outburst. Long-range
accuracy fueled the run, with AU draining three of its season-high
13 treys in in the first four minutes of the game and junior
forward Kyle Sledge adding a free throw and a layup.
But the Wolves, whose potent offense leads the league and ranks
sixth in the nation, battled back to take a 25-22 lead on a
3-pointer from sophomore Dondray Walker with 7:25 left in the first
half.
Anderson reclaimed a brief 28-25 edge on Hash's traditional
three-point play a minute later, but neither team was able to build
more than a three-point lead over the final minutes of the half.
Guard DJ McGowan's free throw gave the Trojans a 35-32 advantage
with 1:10 remaining, but Newberry closed the half with five
unanswered points to take a 37-35 halftime lead.
The Wolves steadily crept out to their largest advantage of the
game, 54-45, midway through the second half before AU reeled off
seven consecutive points to trim the Newberry lead to just two.
Forward Bo Holston ignited the surge with a pair of free throws and
sophomore Chris Ross followed a Denzail Jones 3-pointer with a
short turnaround jumper in the paint.
A pair of free throws from Jones cut the Newberry lead to 62-61
with 2:51 left and after the Wolves' Brandon Riley made one of two
from the line, Jones knotted the score at 63 apiece.
Walker connected on a jumper from the right baseline to give
Newberry a two-point lead with 38.9 seconds on the clock and the
Trojans were unable to convert on the other end and were forced to
foul. However, the Wolves misfired on three consecutive free throws
inside the final 19 seconds of regulation, enabling Hash to drop in
a driving layup with less than a second on the clock to send the
contest into the first extra frame tied at 65-65.
Newberry claimed a 71-67 lead less than two minutes into the
first overtime, but AU rallied to take a 78-75 edge on sophomore
guard Myson Jones' free throw with four seconds left. But Aegir
Steinarsson answered for Newberry, as the sophomore guard knocked
down a game-tying trey from the top of the circle as time
expired.
The Trojans never trailed in the second overtime period, as
Jones scored eight of AU's first 13 points of the frame and the
Trojans connected on 14-of-16 free throws inside the final 1:12 to
seal the win.
Hash was 11-of-12 from the line on the night and added a
team-high four assists, while Jones finished with a career-20
points. Senior guard Denzail Jones tossed in 15 points and recorded
eight rebounds and Bo Holston chipped in 12 points and pulled down
eight boards. Sledge narrowly a double-double, scoring nine points
and grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.
Walker led the Wolves with a double-double of 28 points and 10
rebounds with six 3-pointers, while Steinarsson added a career-high
21 points. Riley scored 12 points for Newberry.
The Trojans open a two-game South Atlantic Conference road swing
at No. 12 Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, then visit Tusculum next
Wednesday.
