ANDERSON, S.C. - Using a pair of goals in each half the Anderson
University women's soccer team blanked Erskine, 4-0, in
nonconference action Saturday afternoon at Trojan Stadium.
"Sometimes goals don't dictate the way the game plays out," said
Anderson head coach Samar Azem. "It must be said that Erskine took
control of the run of play for the middle part of the game. They
put together a few things that we weren't used to, had a lot of
energy behind it and we took a little longer to adjust to it.
Regardless, we came out very strong and proved why the first 15
minutes of every game are important."
Anderson (2-1-1) won its second consecutive decision and claimed
its fourth straight past the Flying Fleet, which fell to 1-2-1 on
the season with its second straight loss.
With the win, Anderson claimed a 1.5 to 0.5 lead in the Beville
Cup standings.
The Trojans stunned Erskine with a pair of goals just seconds
apart in the fifth minute of action and added another two scores in
the 75th minute and at the 79:11 mark to set the final score.
Senior Carrie Settle followed a corner kick from the left side
off the foot of junior Krystal Goss with her first goal of the
season from close range on the far side of the goal to give AU an
early 1-0 lead.
It was Goss's turn just moments later, as the Newry, S.C. native
worked free on the right side of the box and fired a shot past
Erskine keeper Katie Lyle to give AU a 2-0 advantage with less than
five minutes gone in the contest.
The two-goal edge was all the stellar Trojan defense needed for
its third straight shutout, as AU net-minder Kaitlyn Neipp did not
have to face a shot from the Flying Fleet until the 28th minute,
following back-to-back corner kicks from Erskine.
Anderson outshot Erskine 16-4 on the afternoon and held a 5-3 edge
in corner kicks.
"Carrie has been doing phenomenally well at set plays in
practice and she finished a great one tonight," added Azem.
"Krystal is truly coming out of her shell and creating such a
strong attack for us. She played a great ball to Carrie on the
corner and finished a nice one herself. Once we readjusted some
things in the second half, we took control of the game again. Some
of our newcomers are bringing a lot to the table and stepping into
key roles. Meanwhile our veterans are doing a fantastic job of
keeping the team grounded, organized, and the standard very high.
Erskine is always going to be a good battle. They're a tough, hard
working, well coached team. I'm very proud of girls. They battled
hard today, readjusted, and played some very smart and savvy
soccer. We also stayed organized defensively through our mids and
our backs and Kaitlyn did a good job to keep us in shutout mode for
our third one.
Overall I'm very excited for these young ladies, they've been
through a lot, worked incredibly hard, become so disciplined and we
are seeing some very positive things come together. We've got one
more regional game this week and I believe the girls are ready for
it."
The Trojans opens a two-match road swing at Georgia College on
Wednesday, with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
