ANDERSON, S.C. - Using a both a balanced offensive attack and a
stout defensive effort, the Anderson University volleyball earned a
pair of sweeps at the AU Invitational Saturday at the Abney
Athletic Center.
The Trojans blanked Barton, 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-17) and Coker
3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-15) to improve to 6-1 on the season. Barton
slipped to 0-4 while Coker remained winless at 0-8.
"This was a great weekend for our team," said Anderson head
coach Craig Mosqueda. "Even though we dropped a match to Belmont
Abbey, we learned a lot about our team and the work we need to put
in to improve. Even after the loss, our team played with more
purpose and aggression. This was seen in our first game against
Coker when we were down in the first set and stormed back to win
the set and the match. Our hard work from the spring is definitely
paying off."
Sophomore Hailey Pittman led the offensive attack with 20 kills
on the day, while Shannon Gillespie added 15 and freshman Victoria
Wehrmann chipped in 14. Meghan Cautero handed out 58 assists on the
day and defensively, Alix Hooker recorded 21 digs and Gillespie
notched 20.
Senior Tiffany Rowe recorded six blocks in the two matches, with
Pittman garnering four.
Both Pittman and Rowe were named to
the All-Tournament Team.
Anderson wraps up its five-match homestand by playing host to
Queens on Tuesday. First-serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Abney
Athletic Center.
