ANDERSON, S.C. - In a battle between two regionally-ranked
teams, Tusculum outpaced Anderson, 3-0, in South Atlantic
Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Trojan
Stadium.
Anderson (4-3-1, 2-1 SAC), which is ranked 10th in the Southeast
Region, had its two-match win streak snapped and suffered its first
home setback of the season, while Tusculum (6-1-1, 2-0 SAC), ranked
sixth in the region, earned its first road win of the campaign and
has not lost since the second match of the season.
The Pioneers entered the contest looking to avenge a pair of
setbacks suffered at the hands of the Trojans a year ago, as AU
defeated Tusculum 1-0 in overtime during the regular season, then
slipped past the Pioneers in a shootout in the SAC Tournament
quarterfinals.
The contest featured a pair of stellar defensive teams, with
Anderson having recorded five clean sheets and given up just four
goals on the season entering the contest, while TC had posted four
shutouts and surrendered just five goals.
After a scoreless first half, the Pioneers struck for the first
goal of the day in the 56th minute, as sophomore Jana Linke scored
her second goal of the season moments after Tusculum's third corner
kick of the contest was knocked around in front of the Trojan
net.
Freshman Gabrielle Whitt added an insurance goal for the
Pioneers in the 78th minute and freshman Taylor Lewis set the final
score at the 79:42 mark when she got behind the Trojan defense and
managed to find an open net.
Anderson keeper Kaitlyn Neipp recorded four saves on the
afternoon, while suffering the loss. TC's Marissa Williams earned
the win while going the distance for the Pioneers and notching five
saves.
Tusculum out-shot AU, 10-7, and posted a 6-2 advantage in corner
kicks.
Anderson has a week off before opening a two-match road swing at
Lincoln Memorial on Saturday. Kick-off versus the Railsplitters is
scheduled for 1 p.m. in Harrogate, Tenn.
