ANDERSON, S.C. - Behind a season-best.357 attack percentage, the
Anderson volleyball team wrapped up its brief two-match South
Atlantic Conference homestand by sweeping Carson-Newman, 3-0
(25-15, 25-18, 25-19) Saturday afternoon at the Abney Athletic
Center.
Anderson (8-5, 1-3 SAC) earned its second win in the last three
outings, while garnering its first league victory. Carson-Newman
slipped to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in the league after dropping its
second decision in its last three contests.
Anderson sophomore Shannon Gillespie shared match-high honors
with 14 kills, while Hailey Pittman added 11 kills on the strength
of a season-best .579 attack percentage. Sophomore setter Meghan
Cautero handed out a match-high 36 assists and Alix Hooker recorded
a team-high 10 digs. Senior Tiffany Rowe garnered eight blocks on
the afternoon.
Sophomore Lauren Santarelli led the Eagles with 14 kills, while
sophomore Kristen Pickett dished out 28 assists and senior Angelle
Hayes came up with 17 digs.
The Trojans trailed twice early in the first set before taking
advantage of Carson-Newman miscues to go on a 5-1 run and taking a
lead they would not relinquish at 9-6. Anderson pushed out to an
eight-point advantage on four occasions before closing the set on
consecutive kills from Pittman and freshman Victoria Wehrmann.
The second frame featured four early ties, with the Eagles
claiming a 15-10 lead behind Santerelli's four kills. But the
Trojans refused to go away and reeled off an 8-2 run with Pittman
knocking down three kills and the AU defense posting a pair of
blocks during the surge, as AU claimed an 18-17 edge. With Cautero
and Pittman serving, the Trojans scored seven of the frame's final
eight points to claim a two-set cushion. Sophomore Kelley Lacy
notched three of her seven kills on the afternoon during the
outburst, while Pittman added a pair as the Trojans closed out the
set.
The third and final set featured seven ties before Anderson
snapped a 12-12 deadlock on a Lacey kill and an ace from Kalie
Endres. The Trojans edged out to a 21-16 lead and Carson-Newman
would get no closer the rest of the way.
"This was a weekend of lows and highs," said Anderson head coach
Craig Mosqueda. "On Friday, I was very impressed with our team in
games one through three, but we didn't finish the match and didn't
stick to the game plan. However, after a disappointing loss to LMU
on Friday, the team came out determined not to let our momentum
slip. We came out and served aggressively and stuck to the game
plan. Most importantly, we fought for every point in every set.
Carson-Newman is a very good team and it was a great win for us. We
definitely turned a corner today."
Anderson goes on the road for three contests, beginning at Mars
Hill on Friday, continuing with Tusculum Saturday afternoon and
wrapping up with Erskine on Tuesday, Oct. 2. First-serve versus the
Lions Friday is scheduled for 7 p.m.
