ANDERSON, S.C. - Paced by guards Nick Trull and Denzail Jones on
the offensive end, the Anderson men's basketball team outpaced
Newberry, 96-71, in South Atlantic Conference play Wednesday night
at the Abney Athletic Center.
Anderson (17-4, 12-1 SAC) won its third straight and 10th in the
last 11, while earning its eighth home win of the season. The
Trojans' defense held Newberry (13-8, 7-6 SAC), which entered the
contest with the nation's second-highest scoring offense, to nearly
20 points under its average.
The contest featured just three lead changes, all occurring in
the first 10 minutes of the game. Neither team shot well early in
the contest, as they combined to connect on just six of their first
24 shots in the fast-paced opening eight minutes.
Trailing, 11-8, at the 11:10 mark of the first half, the Trojans
went on a 12-2 outburst to gain a lead they would not relinquish.
Junior guard Denzail Jones sparked the run with five straight
points and sophomore guard Chandler Hash knocked down a jumper.
Forward Stephen Cobb followed a Newberry basket with a trey and
senior guard Nick Trull closed the surge with a pair of free throws
to give AU a 20-13 advantage with 8:40 left in the first
half
Still leading by seven with just less than three minutes
remaining in the opening half, Anderson closed out the frame with a
12-4 run to set the score at 43-28 at the break, with Jones
contributing seven points.
Anderson pushed out to a 53-33 cushion in the opening five minutes
of the second half and Newberry would get no closer through the
remainder of the contest, with AU leading by 26 points late in the
game.
Jones led all scorers with 29 points, while also dishing out a
game-high five assists and swiping three steals. The junior from
Tuscaloosa, Ala., has averaged nearly 27 points and four steals for
the Trojans over the past three contests. Trull added 21 points,
with 16 coming in the decisive first half. Hash chipped in 11
points off the bench.
Freshman forward Dondray Walker led the Wolves with 15 points
and senior forward Matt Dixon added 13. Aegir Steinarsson and guard
Shamel Akins scored 12 points apiece.
The Trojans close out their two-game SAC homestand on Saturday
by playing host to Catawba on "Play 4Kay Day" to help raise breast
cancer awareness and funds for research. Tip-off for the
women's-men's doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
