MARS HILL, N.C. - With five players reaching doubled figures for
the third time this season, Anderson downed Mars Hill, 87-74, in
South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action Saturday
afternoon at Stanford Arena.
Anderson (16-4, 11-1 SAC) pulled away late to claim its second
consecutive win and its 13th win in the last 15 games, while Mars
Hill (4-17, 2-10 SAC) dropped its fourth straight and 11th of its
last 12.
Anderson jumped out to a quick lead, building a 25-11-point lead
with 11:45 remaining in the first half. Junior guard Denzail Jones
paced the quick start for the Trojans, scoring 17 first-half points
on 5-of-9 shooting. With AU holding a 31-22 lead, the Lions posted
a 14-4 run that gave MHC a 36-35 lead with 1:20 remaining in the
first half. Freshman guard Terrell Harris scored six points during
the run, while senior forward Sammy Emile added five.
The lead was brief however, as Anderson's D.J. McGowan scored
the final five points of the half to give AU a 40-36 lead at
intermission despite being held to just 29.3 percent shooting
(12-of-41). In the first half, the Lions connected on 12-of-27
(44.4 percent) of their field goal attempts.
With the Trojans leading, 59-47, with 13:06 remaining in the
contest, Mars Hill used a 13-3 run to trim the Anderson lead to
just 62-60 with 9:44 left. Emile scored eight of the points in the
run with a 3-pointer and five free throws, while JaShawn Anderson
contributed a pair of free throws during the stretch.
The Trojans responded with the deciding run as an 18-4 surge
over the next six minutes gave Anderson an 80-66 lead with 3:28
left to put the game out of reach. The Trojans notched nine points
during the run from the charity stripe. Sophomore Chandler Hash
scored eight points, and senior guard Nick Trull added five during
the game's deciding stretch. On the afternoon, the Trojans
connected on 32-of-41 free throw attempts (78 percent), while the
Lions converted 22-of-39 (56.4 percent) from the charity
stripe.
Anderson held a 57-37 rebounding edge, including 24 offensive
boards that produced a 25-3 advantage in second-chance points for
the Trojans.
Jones paced the Trojans with 20 points, while Trull added an
all-around effort for the Trojans, filling up the stat sheet with
14 points, a career-high 13 rebounds and five assists for his third
career double-double. Taylor Shugart added 13 points, becoming just
the eighth player in school history to reach 1,000 career points
with his sixth point at the 4:26 mark of the first half. Sophomore
Chandler Hash chipped in 12 and senior Stephen Cobb netted 10 for
the Trojans.
Mars Hill forward Sammy Emile also eclipsed 1,000-point
milestone for his career with a 28-point effort. Freshman Terrell
Harris added 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting for the Lions.
Anderson returns to the Abney Center to open a two-game
conference homestand on Wednesday, when the Trojans play host to
Newberry College. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m.
