RALEIGH, N.C. - The Anderson softball erupted for 28 hits and 19
runs en route to a doubleheader sweep of Shaw, 10-2 and 9-0 Friday
afternoon at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
Anderson evened its season record at 2-2 with the wins, while
Shaw slipped to 1-4.
Game #1
Anderson 10, Shaw 2 (5 innings)
Freshman Rachel Rhodes was three-for-three with three RBI,
while freshman second baseman Jessica Neidigh finished the game
2-for-3 and scored three runs. Sophomore center fielder Charlotte
Sieber was also 2-for-3 and scored twice.
Freshman hurler Larissa Ostapiak (1-1) earned her first win in
the Black & Gold by tossing five innings and surrendering seven
hits while giving up two earned runs. She struck out five and
issued one walk.
The Trojans sent seven batters to the plate in the first inning,
jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead. Neidigh led off the game with a
single down the right-field line and scored on Rhodes' two-out
two-RBI single down the left-field line. Sophomore Danielle
Swygert, who had drawn a two-out walk, also scored on the hit.
The Lady Bears evened the score with a solo run in both the
second and third frames, but Anderson put the game out of reach
with five runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth, while
shutting down the Shaw offense for the run-rule decision in five
innings.
Game #2
Anderson 9, Shaw 0, (6 innings)
Sophomore shortstop Abby Child was a perfect 4-for-4 in the
nightcap, with a home run, a double and a pair of singles, while
driving in two runs and crossing the plate twice. Neidigh also
homered and added a triple to go along with a single, while posting
two RBI and scored twice. Swygert finished with two singles and a
walk and scored a run. Freshman Rebecca Martin drove in three runs
- two on a sixth-inning home run.
Senior Amber Duncan earned the shutout by going six innings, while
giving up just three hits. She also struck out 10 and walked
three.
Child opened the scoring with her first home run of the season
and the Trojans posted runs in every inning but the second to claim
the sweep.
Anderson continues its season-opening 10-game road swing by
visiting Chowan University for a Noon twinbill on Saturday.
