ANDERSON, S.C. - Freshman Victoria Wehrmann and senior Tiffany
Rowe each recorded double-figure kills, but the Anderson volleyball
team wrapped up the regular season with a 3-1 (24-26, 25-17, 24-26,
16-25) loss to Newberry in South Atlantic Conference action Friday
night at the Abney Athletic Center.
The setback dampened senior night for the senior duo of Rowe and
teammate Shelby Netherton, who played their final match in the
Abney Center.
With a win, Anderson (13-16, 5-13 SAC) could have clinched a
berth as the eighth seed in next week's conference tournament, but
will await the results of Saturday afternoon's contest between
league-leading Wingate and Carson-Newman. If homestanding
Carson-Newman upsets the Bulldogs, the Eagles will claim the eighth
seed.
Either the Trojans or Eagles will square off against top-seeded
Wingate in Friday's quarterfinal round.
Newberry improved to 17-13 overall and 10-8 in the league by
snapping a two-match skid, while earning a sweep of the season
series.
Wehrmann notched a team-high 12 kills, while Rowe added 11 kills
and four total blocks on the night. Sophomore Meghan Cautero dished
out a team-best 33 assists and notched three service aces, with
sophomore Alix Hooker leading five Trojans in double-figure digs
with 24.
Rowe is currently first in the South Atlantic Conference and
33rd in the nation in blocks and currently has 375 total blocks,
214 block assists and 161 solo blocks, which all three rank second
in the Anderson record books.
Anderson pushed out to a six-point advantage twice in the
opening set, but the Wolves went on a 7-1 run to even the score for
the second time at 13-13. The score was tied nine more times, with
neither team able to gain more than a two-point edge. The Trojans,
trailed 24-22 and held off set point three times before Newberry
captured the narrow win.
The Trojans jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead in the second frame
and never trailed en route to the convincing win.
The third set featured 11 ties, again with neither team able to
gain a decisive lead until late in the frame. Trailing, 22-18,
Anderson reeled off five consecutive points to earn a brief 23-22
lead before the Wolves countered with four of the set's final four
