SALISBURY, N.C. - Anderson rallied to claim a five-set win over
host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on
Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Trojans won the final six points
of the final set and won the match by the scores of 12-25, 26-24,
17-25, 26-24 and 15-13 to improve to 13-14 and 5-11. Catawba fell
to 10-12 and 7-7.
Anderson trailed 13-9 in the final set, but a kill from Shannon
Gillespie and two Catawba errors brought the Trojans within one.
Hailey Pittman pulled Anderson even with a kill then Gillespie
killed a point to give the Trojans match point. Gillespie ended the
match on an ace.
Gillespie and Pittman led Anderson with 21 kills apiece.
Gillespie added 13 digs, while setter Meghan Cautero handed out 53
kills. Libero Alix Hooker collected 18 digs.
The loss spoiled a career-high 28 kills by Catawba's Kaitlyn
Whitmer, who added 21 digs. Carson Brewer added 17 kills, while
Rachel Gallup tallied 15 kills. Setter Jordan Raye delivered 59
assists with libero Jenny Young had 44 digs.
Catawba got out of the gates quickly to win the first set
25-12. The Lady Indians hit at
52%, getting four kills each from Whitmer and Gallup. Raye had the
kill on set point. Anderson won a back-and-fourth second set that
saw 13 ties and five lead changes. Gallup and Brewer had
consecutive kills for Catawba to tie the set at 22. Anderson never
allowed the Lady Indians to go on top and closed out the set on a
Gillespie kill.
The Lady Indians would again take a one-set lead by taking the
third set. Down 10-6, Catawba went on a 12-3 run to take control.
Whitmer had three kills and an ace in the run. Raye would again
kill off the set point.
Set four was similar to set two with 16 ties and four lead
changes. Catawba grabbed the only three-point lead of the set at
22-19 on consecutive kills from Brewer. Pittman had a kill and
Cautero an ace to close the gap to 22-21. After a Catawba error, a
kill from Pittman put the Trojans up 23-22. Raye and Brewer had
kills around another from Pittman to tie the set at 24. Tiffany
Rowe closed out the set for the Trojans with a kill and a combo
block.
Catawba held a 6-2 lead early in set five before Anderson
rallied on two kills from Rowe to pull within 7-6. With the set
tied at nine, Catawba pushed ahead with a four-point run. From
there, Anderson rallied to win the match.
Anderson will look to continue building momentum when the
Trojans visit league-leading Wingate Saturday afternoon.
First-serve versus the Bulldogs is scheduled for 2 p.m.
