NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Anderson volleyball team fell to Newberry, 3-1 (26-24, 16-25, 22-25, 23-25) in South Atlantic Conference action Tuesday night at Eleazer Arena.

Newberry improved to 10-9 overall and 4-5 in the conference with its second straight win and has won three of its last four, while Anderson slipped to 9-10 overall and 2-7 in the league.

The first set featured 15 ties, with sophomore Hailey Pittman notching a team-high seven kills in the first frame, while senior Tiffany Rowe added three kills and a pair of block assists. The Trojans snapped an 11-11 score with a 5-1 outburst to build a 16-12 lead, as AU capitalized on three Wolves errors and Pittman and Rowe each posted a kill during the surge. But Newberry countered with a 7-3 run of its own to even the set at 19 apiece. The set was tied four more times, but the Trojans refused to surrender the lead and claimed the 26-24 win on another pair of Newberry miscues.

The Wolves jumped out to an 8-1 advantage in the second set and AU was unable to recover, as Newberry pushed out to a double-digit lead at 15-5. The Trojans pulled within 19-12 on a kill by senior Shelby Netherton, but it was as close as Anderson would get, as Newberry took the 25-16 victory on the strength of a .333 hitting percentage.

The Wolves were nearly as effective in the third set, hitting .318 and gaining an early 8-3 edge before the Trojans went on a 6-2 run to trim the deficit to one, at 10-9. Netherton sparked the outburst with a kill, with Wehrmann and Pittman each adding a kill. Still trailing by a pair, at 12-10, Rowe scored on a block and following a Newberry point, Rowe added another kill and a service error by the Wolves knotted the score at 14-14. The set saw six additional ties, but the Trojans were unable to garner the lead and Newberry snapped a 22-22 tie with three consecutive points.

The Trojans nearly forced a fifth set by racing to a 10-4 lead in the fourth frame, with freshman Victoria Wehrmann igniting the Trojans with back-to-back kills to begin the set. Anderson also capitalized on six Newberry errors en route to building the early advantage, but the Wolves chipped away and eventually knotted the score at 17-17 and completed an 8-2 run to take their largest lead of the set at 20-18. Following an Anderson timeout, the Trojans took their final lead at 22-21, as Pittman and sophomore Shannon Gillespie each knocked down a kill and Newberry committed a pair of errors. But the Wolves countered by scoring four of the set's final five points.

Pittman led the Trojans with 13 kills, while Rowe and Wehrmann each added eight kills, with Rowe recording a season-high nine block assists on the night. Netherton chipped in a season-high five kills. Sophomore Meghan Cautero handed out 39 assists, with sophomores Alix Hooker, Shannon Gillespie and Kelley Lacey recording 19 digs, 18 digs and 10 digs, respectively.

Newberry's Samantha Parrish led all players with 23 kills, while Blair Browning dished out 55 assists and Elayni Stokes notched 21 digs.

Anderson returns to the friendly confines of the Abney Athletic Center on Friday as the Trojans begin the second half of the conference double round-robin slate. AU will be looking to avenge an earlier setback, as first-serve versus Brevard is scheduled for 7 p.m.
