ANDERSON, S.C. - Three second-half goals lifted visiting Wingate
past Anderson, 4-1, in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer
action Saturday afternoon at Trojan Stadium.
Anderson slipped to 5-5-3 overall and 3-2-2 in the league, while
Wingate improved to 9-1-1 overall and 6-1 in the league with its
sixth consecutive victory and seventh in its last eight
outings.
Wingate pressed the offensive attack early, but the Trojan
defense held off the Bulldogs until senior forward Shelby Forza
gave the visitors a 1-0 lead after breaking open and put the ball
into the back of the net from the left side at the 26:34 mark.
Anderson countered less than three minutes later with a pair of
shots in the span of 72 seconds, with junior forward Krystal Goss'
attempt saved by Wingate goalkeeper Miriam Boucher and freshman
Sarah Laney's attempt going over the net.
Junior Krystal Goss evened the score at 1-1 with her
team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 44th minute, as she
gathered in a loose ball and lofted her shot just over Boucher into
the net.
The Anderson defense and net-minder Kaitlyn Neipp rose to the
occasion in the 54th minute following a foul whistled on the
Trojans. Neipp turned away a penalty kick attempt by Wingate
sophomore Katie Simpson, then the AU defense blocked a follow-up
attempt and Neipp notched another save in a matter of just seconds
in front of the AU net.
But the Bulldogs took the lead on a goal in the 69th minute off
a corner kick and added two insurance goals in a two-minute span
late in the contest.
Wingate held a 27-5 advantage in shots and a 10-0 edge in corner
kicks.
Neipp finished with a career-high 16 saves on the afternoon,
while going the distance for the Trojans. Boucher garnered the win
for Wingate, recording two saves.
Anderson embarks on a two-game road swing beginning at Columbia
College Wednesday. Kick-off versus the Fighting Koalas is slated
for 7 p.m.
