WINGATE, N.C. - Senior Taylor Shugart equaled his career-high
with 24 points to lift the Anderson University men's basketball
team to a 70-54 South Atlantic Conference road win past Wingate
Wednesday night at Cuddy Arena.
Anderson (14-3, 9-0 SAC) also earned its seventh road win of the
season en route to claiming its 11th victory in the last 12
outings. Wingate fell to 10-9 overall and 6-3 in league action,
while having its win streak snapped at three.
The Trojans jumped out to a 13-5 lead inside the opening five
minutes of the contest, as Shugart scored six of his 10 first-half
points, but the Trojans went cold, enabling the Bulldogs to go on
an 8-2 run to take a brief one-point, 16-15, lead with 12:22 on the
clock.
But Anderson responded with seven unanswered points as part of a
9-2 run to push back out to a 24-18 lead, with Shugart igniting the
surge and guards Nick Trull and Jo'el Lamb combining for the next
five Trojan points.
A pair of free throws from junior guard Denzail Jones gave the
Trojans a 29-23 advantage with just less than five minutes
remaining in the opening half, before Wingate posted a 7-2 run to
trim the AU cushion to just 31-30 at the 2:43 mark. Sophomore
forward Kyle Sledge slowed the Bulldog run with a basket and the
Trojans held a narrow, 36-35, edge at the half.
Lamb notched the first basket of the second frame to boost the
Trojan lead to three and while Wingate trimmed the AU lead to one
on three occasions, the Bulldogs were unable to recapture the lead
over the final 20 minutes as Anderson countered each run.
The Trojans pulled away in the final four minutes of the game,
when leading 57-51 with 4:31 left, AU closed the game with a 13-3
run, claiming its largest lead of the contest at 69-52 with 29
seconds remaining.
Shugart narrowly missed his fourth double-double of the season
by recording nine rebounds, while Trull added 14 points to claim
the second spot on Anderson's all-time scoring list with 1,354
career points. Lamb added nine points, a game-high 11 boards and
two blocked shots.
Senior guard Jamie Vaughn, the reigning SAC Player of the Week,
was the lone Bulldog to reach double figures with 11 points.
The Trojans begin the second half of the South Atlantic
Conference double round robin schedule by playing host to Brevard
Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. AU will be seeking a sweep of the
regular-season series after having defeated the Tornados, 66-62, in
overtime back on Nov. 30.
