JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Paced by five players in double figures,
Anderson won its sixth straight game, defeating Carson-Newman,
82-70, in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action
Saturday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse.
Anderson (13-3, 8-0 SAC) earned its sixth road win of the season
en route to claiming its 10th win in the last 11 outings, while
Carson-Newman fell to 10-8 overall and 3-5 in league action, as the
Eagles dropped their fourth game in the last five contests.
Trojan junior guard Denzail Jones set the pace early for AU,
scoring 12 of Anderson's first 16 points by going a perfect
four-of-four from beyond the arc in the game's first five minutes,
while senior Jo'el Lamb added the other four on a pair of
jumpers.
Jones' connected on the first of his career-high four treys to knot
the score at 5-5 and his second 3-pointer tied the contest at
10-10. Jones' third triple gave the Trojans a lead they would not
surrender, at 13-10, less than four minutes into the contest. The
long-range basket snapped the 10-10 deadlock and sparked a 17-4 run
over a five-minute span early in the first half, gaining a
double-digit lead for the Trojans with 11:31 on the clock.
Five Trojans contributed to the decisive outburst, with the
Eagles trimming Anderson's lead to 10 points following the Trojans'
surge, but it was as close as Carson-Newman would get during the
remainder of the first half, as AU held a 46-33 advantage at the
break.
Anderson led by as many as 16 points in the second half, with
Carson-Newman chipping away to pull as close as 68-61 with 6:44
left in the contest, but senior guard Nick Trull connected on a
pair of free throws and following a charity toss from Eagles'
forward Antoine Davis, AU's Chandler Hash drained back-to-back
3-pointers to lift the lead back to 76-62 with less than five
minutes left.
Anderson held a 36-34 rebounding edge and outshot the Eagles, 45.8
percent to 42.4 percent on the afternoon. The 11 treys marked the
fifth time this season that Anderson tallied double figures from
long range.
Jones paced the Trojans with 17 points, while Hash added 13
points off the bench. A trio of seniors - Trull, Tyrell McDowell
and Stephen Cobb each netted 12 points, with McDowell narrowly
missing his first double-double of the season, recording a
team-high eight rebounds and a career-high seven assists. Trull
also handed out a career-best five assists. Senior Jo'el Lamb
garnered seven boards in the winning effort.
Davis scored a game-high 25 points and eight rebounds for
Carson-Newman, with Corbin Jackson chipping in 13 points and seven
boards.
The Trojans close the first half of their league double round
robin slate at Wingate on Wednesday. Tip-off versus the Bulldogs is
scheduled for 8 p.m.
