Tusculum Holds Off Trojans

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - Sophomore Joy Hiller recorded seven kills and freshman Kelley Lacey added five, but it was not enough, as Anderson fell to Tusculum, 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-18) in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action Friday night at Pioneer Arena.

Anderson (5-11, 3-3 SAC) was looking to hand Tusculum (11-4, 4-3) its first home loss of the season, but instead dropped its third consecutive contest, while the Pioneers won their second in the last three and improved to 7-0 at home on the season.

Tusculum broke away from a narrow two-point edge with an 11-3 run in the first set to build a double-digit lead at 22-12 and went on to claim the opening frame.

The Pioneers ran out to a 21-6 lead in the second set and the Trojans were unable to recover, as Tusculum grabbed the win.

The Trojans jumped to an early 7-3 advantage in the third set, but Tusculum answered with a 7-2 run to gain the lead at 10-9. The rest of the set featured four ties, but the Pioneers closed out the set with a 12-5 run to take the win.

The Pioneers recorded a .330 team hitting percentage on the night, while the Trojans hit .075.

The AU trio of Chelsea Olson, Shannon Gillespie and Marlie Bryant each added four kills on the night, while Gillespie, Bryant and Alix Hooker recorded 10 digs each. Freshman setter Meghan Cautero added 17 assists and four digs.

Anderson will get back on the court Saturday, when the Trojans visit Mars Hill. First- serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. versus the Lions.
