ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Despite a pair of goals from sophomore
midfielder Allie Waters, the Anderson women's soccer team opened
the 2011 season with a 3-2 setback to host Flagler in the Kick-Off
Classic Thursday night at Saints Field.
Flagler sophmore Brittany D'Addio scored the lone goal of the
second half - the game-winner off a free kick at the 60:38 mark to
give the Saints the narrow win in the season-opener for both
teams.
Playing the third match and wrapping up the opening day of the
tournament, Anderson (0-1) bolted to the early lead on Waters'
first goal less than two minutes into the contest. Waters and
junior forward Jessica Kleinberg worked two-on-one versus Saints'
goalkeeper Cristina Coca, with Kleinberg notching the assist after
finding Waters for the open shot.
The homestanding Saints (1-0) answered with two goals in a
six-minute span to regain the early advantage, with forward Loren
Cate, Flagler's top scorer from a year ago, finding the back of the
net from 13 yards out at the 7:31 mark. The junior from Apopka,
Fla., then put Flagler ahead by scoring on a free kick with just
more than 31 minutes left in the first half.
Waters evened the score again with her second goal of the night
off a free kick at the 26:26 mark and the contest was tied heading
into intermission, with Flagler holding an 8-2 advantage in shots
in the opening half.
Flagler outshot AU, 18-7, on the night and recorded nine shots
on goal, while the Trojans notched five shots on goal. The Saints
held a narrow 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. The pair of goals from
Waters marked the Piedmont, S.C., native's first scores in an
Anderson uniform.
Coca earned the win, as she went the distance for Flagler, while
AU sophomore net-minder Kaitlin Neipp suffered the loss.
Anderson will be looking to even its early-season record when
the Trojans square off against nationally fifth-ranked Florida Tech
on Saturday. Kick-off versus the Panthers is scheduled for 1 p.m.
at Saints Field.
