NEWBERRY, S.C. - Despite four players reaching double figures in
the scoring column, the Anderson men's basketball was unable to
overcome second-half foul trouble as Newberry outlasted the
Trojans, 87-75, in South Atlantic Conference play Wednesday night
at Eleazer Arena.
Anderson (14-9, 8-5 SAC) suffered its' second consecutive
setback, while Newberry (11-10, 6-7 SAC) earned a split in the
season series by winning its second straight contest and fifth in
its last six.
Neither team was able to build more than a five-point lead in the
opening 20 minutes, with the Trojans taking a 35-33 lead into the
locker room at intermission after trailing just twice in the
opening frame - inside the first minute of action and briefly with
2:31 left in the half.
Newberry used a 12-3 second-half run to gain a 63-55 lead with
7:37 remaining and with three starters hampered by late foul
trouble, AU was unable to overtake the Wolves.
Freshman guard Denzail Jones paced the Trojan attack with 15
points, while Taylor Shugart recorded his third double-double of
the season with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds before
fouling out. Guard Nick Trull added 12 points and senior guard
Brandon Young netted 10 points.
Newberry's Tony Davis led all scorers with 20 points and Brandon
Riley tallied 18 points for the Wolves.
Anderson closes out the two-game conference road swing with a
matchup versus Catawba on Saturday. Tip-off versus the Indians is
slated for 4 p.m. at Goodman Gym.
