ANDERSON, S.C. - Senior guard Ashley Abed dropped in the
game-winning layup with four seconds remaining to lift Anderson to
a 67-65 upset win past league-leading Tusculum in South Atlantic
Conference action Wednesday night at the Abney Athletic
Center.
Anderson (10-13, 6-9 SAC) snapped the Lady Pioneer's 10-game win
streak and prevented Tusculum from clinching a share of the SAC
regular-season title. The Trojans have won three of last their last
four outings and avenged an earlier 24-point setback at the hands
of the Lady Pioneers, who dropped to 16-7 overall and 12-3 in the
conference. SAC), and suffered their first loss since dropping a
six-point decision at Wingate on Jan. 9.
Anderson led 62-46 with 6:43 remaining but had to hold off a
furious rally by thi visitors, as Tusculum posted a 19-3 run to tie
the game at 65-65 on a layup by Linda Aughburns with 23 seconds
left. Anderson's Alissa Diaz found Abed cutting to the basket and
the 5-foot-10 senior scored to give AU the edge. A desperation
last-ditch layup by the Pioneers' Jasmine Gunn came after the
buzzer sounded, as the officials waved off the basket..
Anderson led 62-46 following two free throws by Alexa Neal with
6:43 remaining, but the Pioneers reeled off 10 straight points to
pull within 62-56 with 1:29 to go on two foul shots by Gunn. Abed
hit a free throw with 1:11 left to give Anderson a seven-point
lead, but Kendal Baxter answered with a three-pointer to pull the
Pioneers within 63-59 with 1:05 remaining.
A steal by Baxter led to a layup by Gunn with 50 seconds to go
and cut the Anderson advantage to 63-61. Tusculum tied the game at
65-65 on a steal underneath the Lady Pioneers' basket and a layup
by Aughburns with 23 seconds remaining, setting up Abed's
last-second heroics.
Tusculum held a 34-24 rebounding advantage, but Anderson forced
16 Lady Pioneer turnovers.
Sophomore forward Breonda Shannon led Anderson with 16 points,
while Abed finished with 13 points for the Trojans. Diaz added 11
points and dished out a game-high four assists. Sophomore Tilde
Ahlin netted 10 points as the Trojans shot 49.1 percent (28-for-57)
from the field as a team.
Gunn led the Pioneers by scoring a game-high 21 points, the
fourth straight game she has scored at least 20 points. Catherine
Hintz added 13 points and Aughburns added eight points and nine
rebounds.
Anderson wraps up its home schedule on Saturday as the Trojans
play host to Lincoln Memorial on Senior Day. AU will also be
participating in the WBCA's 2011 Pink Zone initiative and all fans
are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.
Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Abney Athletic Center.
