Catawba Holds Off Trojans in Season Finale

Salisbury, N.C. - The Anderson University volleyball team closed out the 2011 season with a 3-0 (20-25, 16-25, 25-27) to Catawba in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym.

Win the win, Catawba (21-6, 14-4 SAC) clinched the second seed in next week's SAC Tournament by winning its ninth straight match, while Anderson closed out its season at 8-22 overall and 4-14 in league play.

Catawba pulled away midway through the opening set then held off a late Anderson charge to take the early lead. The Lady Indians used a 4-1 run to go up 14-11, but the Trojans rallied within 20-19 late in the set. Catawba edged back out to a 22-19 edge, then closed the set with three consecutive points for the set win.

The Lady Indians notched a .500 hitting percentage in set two, going on a five-point run that gave Catawba a 20-13 edge.

Anderson jumped out to 9-4 lead in the third set before Catawba rallied. A kill from freshman Shannon Gillespie put the Trojans up 21-17, but Catawba reeled off five unanswered points to take a 22-21 edge. Anderson fought off a pair of set points but after Catawba to a third match point, the Indians closed out the match.

Gillespie recorded her 12th double-double of the season, with 12 kills and 15 digs, while freshman Alix Hooker added 11 digs. Freshman Meghan Cautero handed out 19 assists and recorded four kills on the afternoon. Senior Marlie Bryant, playing her final match in the Black and Gold, recorded three kills and nine digs.
