HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Anderson volleyball team closed a brief
two-match road swing with a 3-1 (16-25, 24-26, 25-21, 21-25)
setback to Lincoln Memorial in South Atlantic Conference action
Saturday afternoon at Mars Gym.
Anderson slipped to 7-18 overall and 4-10 in the league, while
Lincoln Memorial (16-5 and 10-4 SAC) extended its win streak to
three matches.
The Lady Railsplitters used a .308 hitting percentage to claim
the opening set, as they scored the first eight points of the
frame. The Trojans pulled within 18-10, but it was as close as AU
would get, as LMU took the win.
Anderson took control early in the second set, garnering its
first lead at 4-3 and leading nearly the entire set, but was unable
to pull away from the Lady Railsplitters. LMU chipped away and tied
the score at 21-21. A pair of kills by Anderson gave the Trojans a
23-21 lead and after the two teams swapped kills, Anderson had
set-point with the score 24-23. Back-to-back attack errors and a
kill by LMU's Jennifer Drumm gave the Lady Railsplitters a 25-24
lead before a service ace by Chelsea Ferron put the set away as LMU
won 26-24.
Anderson took advantage of LMU miscues to jump out to an early
5-2 lead with freshman Kelley Lacey serving. The Trojans never
relinquished the early lead, pushing out to a six-point advantage,
at 21-15, as the Trojans won 25-21.
The fourth set featured 11 ties and three lead changes with
neither team being able to pull away. LMU earned got a late lead at
20-19, then held a two-point edge before a kill by Lacey cut the
deficit to one before another kill by LMU's Candace Richardson gave
LMU a 23-21 lead. The Lady Railsplitters took advantage of a pair
of AU miscues to pull out the 25-21 win and take the match.
Freshman Shannon Gillespie notched her fourth straight
double-double and ninth of the season with 14 kills and 12 digs,
while fellow freshman Meghan Cautero recorded a team-best 40
assists. Kalie Endres tallied 17 digs on the afternoon. while Lacey
added 10 digs. Junior Tiffany Rowe recorded an impressive seven
block assists on the afternoon.
Anderson closes out its home schedule with two matches, as the
Trojans play host to Tusculum Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Abney
Athletic Center, then celebrates Senior Day with a 2 p.m. match
Saturday versus Mars Hill.
