Trojans Stumble at Carson-Newman

Box score

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Freshman outside hitter Shannon Gillespie notched her third consecutive double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs, but the Anderson volleyball team opened a two-match South Atlantic Conference road trip with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-17) setback to Carson-Newman Friday night at Holt Fieldhouse.

With the two teams battling for a spot in next month's Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament, Anderson (4-9, 7-17 SAC) had its win streak snapped at two, while Carson-Newman (5-8, 14-10 SAC) won its second straight and earned a split of the season series after dropping a decision to the Trojans in late September.

The Trojans fell behind early in the first set, but rallied to knot the score on three occasions, the final time at 13-13. The Eagles snapped the tie with an 8-2 run to push out to a lead they would not relinquish. AU climbed back within five, at 22-17, but was unable to get any closer.

The second set featured three ties midway through the frame, with Carson-Newman again breaking a 13-13 tie with a 9-2 outburst and pushing out to claim the set.

The Eagles took an early lead in the third set and AU was unable to recover, as Carson-Newman built a nine-point advantage en route to the win.

Gillespie hit a sparkling .375 on the night, while adding three total blocks and has eight double-doubles on the season. Junior Tiffany Rowe posted seven kills and two block assists, while freshman setter Meghan Cautero recorded a team-best 25 assists and freshman Kalie Endres recorded 17 digs.

Anderson wraps up its brief two-game conference road swing at Lincoln Memorial Saturday afternoon. First-serve versus the Railsplitters is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Mars Gym.
