SALISBURY, N.C. - Anderson University sophomore Krystal Goss'
first goal of the season lifted Anderson past Catawba, 1-0, in
South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon
at Frock Field.
Anderson (5-5, 2-2 SAC) won its second consecutive league
matchup, while avenging a shutout setback at the hands of the
Indians last season. Catawba fell to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in the
league as the Indians suffered their fifth consecutive loss.
"It certainly wasn't pretty," said Anderson head coach Samar
Azem. "But I was proud of our group for grinding it out, working on
some tactical principles we've implemented in practice and getting
the win against a very vigilant Catawba side."
After a scoreless opening half, Goss scored the game-winner in
the 48th minute of action from six yards out off an assist from
Jessica Kleinberg - her second of the 2011 campaign.
The Indians' Alyssa Retundie nearly evened the score less than
four minutes later, but her shot was just high and ricocheted off
the crossbar.
The Trojans' defense turned in its second stellar performance in
as many outings, posting its third clean sheet of the season.
Catawba outshot AU, 13-11, on the afternoon and recorded three
corner kicks, but was unable to find the back of the net.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlyn Neipp recorded four saves while
going the distance to earn the win, while Catawba keeper Lindsay
Webster absorbed the loss.
Anderson gets back in action Wednesday, Oct. 5, when the Trojans
play host to Lander for a n on-conference contest, slated for a 5
p.m. kick-off.
