ANDERSON, S.C. - In a rematch of last season's NCAA Southeast
Regional opening-round contest, Anderson outran Catawba, 81-56, in
South Atlantic Conference men's basketball Saturday evening at the
Abney Athletic Center.
The Trojans claimed a narrow 68-66 win past the Indians in that
NCAA matchup when guard Brandon Young drained a 3-pointer from the
right side with just 2.1 seconds on the clock to lift Anderson to
its first-ever win in the NCAA Tournament. But tonight's game did
not require last second heroics, as the Trojans had five players
reach double figures for the second consecutive outing.
Anderson (9-5, 3-1 SAC) improved to 6-1 in the friendly confines
of the Abney Center by winning its seventh game in the last nine
contests, while Catawba (5-7, 1-3 SAC) suffered its third straight
setback.
The first half featured three ties and eight lead changes, with
junior guard Nick Trull's layup with 9:40 left in the opening frame
giving AU a 21-20 lead. The Trojans led the remainder of the
contest as Trull's basket ignited an 11-3 outburst that turned a
one-point deficit for AU into a 30-23 advantage with 4:32
remaining. Junior center Taylor Shugart added four points to help
fuel the run.
Anderson held the lead for the remainder of the game, taking its
largest advantage of the half, 37-28, on a jumper by senior Trey
Britton inside the final minute and AU took a 40-33 lead to the
locker room.
The Trojans took advantage of their inside strength to steadily
build a 58-38 advantage midway through the second stanza and
claimed their largest lead of the contest, 74-43, with just less
than four minutes remaining.
Anderson held a 42-14 scoring advantage in the paint and
out-rebounded the Indians, 38-29 on the night. The Trojans out-shot
Catawba, 50.8 percent to 36.4 percent and forced 19 turnovers.
Catawba freshman guard Keon Moore notched a game-high 21 points,
while Trey Britton and Kevis Cornwell each posted a team-high 14
points for the Trojans. Senior guard Brandon Young added 13 points,
while Denzail Jones and Shugart tallied 12 and 10 points,
respectively. Jones also swiped a game-high three steals.
Anderson closes out the three-game conference homestand when the
Newberry Wolves invade the Abney Center on Wednesday. Tip-off
versus Newberry is slated for 8 p.m. in the second game of a
women's/men's doubleheader at the Abney Center.
