ANDERSON, S.C. - Senior forward Trey Britton notched his second
double-double of the season and freshman guard Denzail Jones
tallied a game-high 20 points as the Anderson men's basketball team
downed Wingate, 83-72, in South Atlantic Conference play Wednesday
night at the Abney Athletic Center.
Anderson (12-7, 6-3 SAC), which has not dropped back-to-back
contests this season, reached the midway point of the conference
schedule by winning its second in the last three outings. Wingate
(10-7, 5-4 SAC) had its' two-game win streak snapped with the
loss.
The Trojans took an early 4-2 advantage in the opening two
minutes of action and led throughout the remainder of the game. AU
connected on five of its first eight shots to jump out to a 14-6
lead with 13:57 left in the first half, then built a 16-point
cushion, its largest of the game, behind a 12-4 run over the next
six minutes.
Wingate's Chase Smith and freshman guard Nick Ross countered
with back-to-back 3-pointers, but AU center Taylor Shugart stemmed
the 'Dogs rally with a short jumper and the Trojans held a 40-30
halftime advantage.
Anderson came out of the break cold from the field, misfiring on
its' first four attempts from the field, but Wingate was unable to
capitalize as the Bulldogs also missed their first three shots of
the second half.
The Trojans edged out to their largest lead of the second half,
50-35, on Britton's old-fashioned three-point play and maintained a
double-digit advantage for the majority of the second frame.
Anderson outscored the Bulldogs, 36-20, in the paint and forced
21 turnovers on the night, while Wingate held a 35-32 rebounding
advantage.
Jones led all scorers with 20 points, while Shugart added 13
points and five rebounds. Britton and Tyrell McDowell netted 12
points apiece, with Britton adding 10 boards and four blocked
shots.
Four Bulldogs also reached double figures, as Ross netted 18
points on the strength of 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc and
Smith dropped in 17 points. Jamie Vaughn chipped in 15 points and
Odell Turner notched 11.
The Trojans open the second half of the South Atlantic
Conference slate by visiting Brevard College Saturday afternoon.
The Tornados handed AU its first of just two home setbacks, 85-84,
in the league-opener for both teams in early December. Tip-off is
slated for 4 p.m. at Boshamer Gymnasium.
