ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson women's basketball team wrapped up
its three-game homestand with a 54-50 setback to Newberry in South
Atlantic Conference play Wednesday night at the Abney Athletic
Center.
The Wolves' Jessica Bearzatto scored the final four points of
the contest from the free throw line as Newberry (8-5, 3-2 SAC) won
its second straight contest. Anderson dropped to 6-7 overall and
2-3 in league action with its fifth consecutive setback.
The game featured four lead changes and two ties inside the
final eight minutes, with the Trojans rallying from a 43-36 deficit
by going on a 12-2 run over a 10-minute span in the second half,
claiming a narrow 48-45 cushion with more than five minutes on the
clock.
The Wolves connected on three-of-four from the charity stripe to
pull even and Helen McKinney's jumper gave Newberry a brief 50-48
lead at the 2:42 mark, before AU's Alexa Neal tied the score at 50
apiece with 2:10 remaining.
The Trojans were hampered by shooting just 20 percent (2-of-10)
from the field through the first nine minutes of the game, but
despite starting the contest slowly AU rallied from an eight-point
deficit midway through the first half when Alexa Neal sandwiched a
pair of 3-pointers around a putback from Breonda Shannon to tie the
score at 18-18 with 6:19 left in the opening frame.
Anderson stretched the run of unanswered points to 12 as Shannon
dropped in another putback and Amanda Parris connected on a
15-footer from the left side, giving AU a 22-18 advantage - its'
largest of the game, with just more than five minutes on the
clock.
Newberry battled back to tie the score again and Anderson went
to the break holding a 28-27 lead.
The Trojans won the rebounding battle, 36-34, but Newberry
outshot AU, 37.8 percent to 33.9 percent on the night.
Neal finished with a game-high 21 points, while Shannon narrowly
missed her first double-double of the season with nine points and a
game-high eight rebounds.
Anderson opens a brief two-game conference road swing Saturday
when the Trojans visit Lincoln Memorial. Tip-off versus the Lady
Railsplitters is slated for 6 p.m. in Harrogate, Tenn.
