ANDERSON, S.C. - Paced by a trio of seniors, the Anderson
volleyball team outlasted Lenoir-Rhyne, 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 25-19,
23-25, 15-13) in a five-set South Atlantic Conference marathon
Saturday afternoon at the Abney Athletic Center.
With the win, Anderson kept its unblemished home record intact
at 6-0 and improved to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in the league, while the
Bears fell to 5-4 and 2-3 in the SAC.
"This was a great win for us," said Anderson head coach Craig
Mosqueda. "We still need to work on our consistency and get more
people involved but a lot of players stepped up this
afternoon."
Outside hitter Jamie Lancaster posted a match-high 28 kills on
the strength of a .519 hitting percentage, while fellow senior
Lindsay Doggett recorded 48 assists in the two-plus hour event.
Senior Adria Mullaney and freshman Katelyn Kraft combined for 35
digs on the defensive side for the Trojans and the two teams
notched a total of 19 aces on the afternoon.
LRC juniors Brooke Christenbury and Chelsea Hill accounted for
21 kills and sophomore middle blocker Cheyenne Cash notched a total
of six blocks for the Bears.
Neither squad was able to gain more than a three-point edge in
the opening frame, with the Bears snapping a 20-20 deadlock with
two consecutive points and holding on for the 25-22 win. AU grabbed
6-5 lead early in the second frame and would not relinquish the
lead as the Trojans eventually pushed out to a late five-point
cushion before earning the 25-21 decision to even the match at one
set apiece.
The Trojans took a 2-1 advantage by claiming a hard-fought third
set. AU trailed, 9-7, before battling back behind a 7-1 run to
garner a four-point lead. Lenoir-Rhyne climbed back within three,
at 22-19, late in the set before Anderson closed by winning three
straight points.
Lenoir-Rhyne jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the fourth set behind
the strong serving of junior Lindsey Cantu before the Trojans
rallied with six unanswered points to knot the score.
The score was tied seven more times, the final time at 23-23,
before LRC claimed the two-point win.
Lenoir-Rhyne edged out to a 7-4 lead in the deciding fifth set,
with AU pulling even at seven but not gaining an advantage until
10-9. The Trojans eventually pulled away from a 13-13 tie to
collect the win.
Anderson opens a two-match conference road trip when the Trojans
visit Lincoln Memorial on Friday, with first serve slated for 6:30
p.m. in Harrogate, Tenn.
