ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Anderson University softball team took two
games from Conference Carolinas-foe Queens University on Wednesday,
winning the first game 7-3 and taking the second game 10-2 in just
four and a half innings of play at Smethers Field. Anderson, which
jumped up to second place in the Conference Carolinas standings
after the doubleheader, moved to 19-13 overall and 9-3 in league
play, while dropping the Royals to 20-19 overall and 11-4. The
opening game saw the Trojans grab an early 1-0 lead off of a Kasey
King single that brought shortstop Meredith Knox across the plate,
the senior's 27th RBI on the season. Royals' pitcher Chantel Dodge
settled in thereafter, but two innings later Amber Duncan walked
with two outs in the bottom of the fourth and AU's next batter,
Kinsley Durham, sent a high home run ball over the left field fence
to increase the Anderson lead to 3-0. The Trojans went to the
bottom of the sixth inning with a 4-0 lead and the second batter of
the inning, Cameron White, lifted a single into left field. Two
batters later, after an Amber Sutherland walk, Elisa Sebastyan hit
an RBI-single that put the Trojans up 5-0. Meredith Knox then
finished out the high-scoring inning with a two-RBI double that hit
the center field wall to put the Trojans up 7-0. After a seventh
inning rally attempt from the Royals, Anderson picked up the game
one win. Senior pitcher Katie Van Gieson (6-1) completed the game
for the Trojans giving up two runs off of eight hits in another
spectacular effort. Meredith Knox went three for four, with all
three hits being scored as doubles. In the second game Anderson
quickly went down 2-0 during the first inning of play, but Trojans
pitcher Donya Cobb settled down, putting up zeros on the
scoreboard. It took the Trojans batters one time through the order
to get in a groove and rallied in the third inning, sparked by a
one-out bunt single from Amber Sutherland. Two batters later,
Meredith Knox doubled to deep left-center field to score
Sutherland. Three batters later, Amber Duncan doubled to put two
more runs on the board in favor of the Trojans. In the fourth
inning, a Meredith Knox three-run home run sailed over the
left-field wall to put Anderson up 7-2. Five batters later, after
singles from Emily Monteith and Kinsley Durham, Cameron White
smashed a double back to the center field wall to bring in the
final three runs of the game. Cobb (4-2), a senior, tossed a crafty
complete game for Anderson, giving up two runs on six hits. Senior
left fielder Elisa Sebastyan went three for three and Meredith Knox
drove in four as she went two for three. The Trojans take the field
again on Saturday as they face first place Limestone in a
conference doubleheader. The first game will get underway at 3 pm
at Smether's field. Box Score Game
