CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Junior guard Brandon Young dropped in the
winning basket with 42 seconds on the clock as the Anderson men's
basketball team avenged an early-season setback by defeating
Queens, 75-73, in Conference Carolinas action Monday night at the
Ovens Athletic Center. The regionally-ranked Trojans placed three
players in double figures as AU extended its win streak to three
games and improved to 17-6 overall and 11-6 in the conference,
while Queens had its three-game winning streak snapped and fell to
11-12 and 8-8. The last time these two teams met, AU fell 92-86 in
overtime in early December as Queens guard Andre Lockhart hit two
free throws with 2:37 remaining in overtime to give the Royals a
one-point lead and Queens held off the homestanding Trojans.
Tonight was a different story, as a last second effort by Queens'
Antonio Stabler tie the game and force overtime wouldn't fall. The
Trojans erased an early seven-point deficit in the second half way
and gained an eight-point advantage on Taylor Shugart's basket with
7:43 remaining. Queens used a Daniel Bailey putback and a Stabler
field goal to tied the game for the eighth time, this time with 59
seconds to play, but 17 seconds later Young nailed the game-winner.
Young led all scorers with 19 points, while Tony Anderson and
Stephen Cobb each had 17. Bailey led Queens with 18 points and
Stabler scored 16. Anderson plays its final road game of the
2009-10 campaign on Saturday when the Trojans visit Barton for a
7:30 p.m. tip-off at Wilson Gym. Box
