Volleyball Closes out Non-Conference Slate With Win Past Lander

Box score

ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson volleyball team opened its final homestand of the season by outpacing Lander, 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-19, 25-21) in non-conference action Tuesday night at the Abney Athletic Center.

Each team entered the contest looking to snap a two-match winless skid with Anderson (18-12) capitalizing on a .294 attack percentage to gain the early one-set advantage over Lander (10-15).

The Trojans won their third straight home match, improving to 11-3 at home, while avenging an earlier 3-2 setback at the hands of the Bearcats, who have dropped three straight contests.

Anderson trailed early in the first set, but rallied to break a 13-13 tie with a 10-3 run that was capped by one of Tiffany Rowe's match-high seven blocks on the night.

The second set featured eight ties, with the Bearcats pushing out to a four-point lead, 17-13, midway through the frame, only to see AU respond with a 7-1 outburst and gain the two-point edge on a kill from freshman Tori Calhoon. LU rallied to knot the score at 21 apiece and again at 23-23, before taking advantage of Trojan errors to claim the set.

Lander led for most of the third set before the Trojans snapped an 18-18 tie with six unanswered points behind the strong serving of junior Marlie Bryant and pushed to the win.

AU again trailed in the fifth and final set before rallying once again with Bryant delivering the serves as the Trojans gradually turned a four-point deficit into an 18-15 lead. The Bearcats pulled within two points late, but were unable to get any closer as Anderson closed by scoring four of the final six points.

Senior Jamie Lancaster posted a double-double with a match-high 11 kills and 13 digs, while freshman Chelsea Olson added 10 kills. Lindsey Doggett continues to add to her school-record assist total, notching 31 on the night, with four other Trojans reaching double-figure digs. Senior Adria Mullaney climbed within seven of overtaking former AU standout Amanda Edwards for second place on the career digs list, coming up with 25, while Doggett added 14 and Bryant and Meagan Murray each collecting 10.

Anderson wraps up the season with home matches on Friday and Saturday, with the Trojans honoring three seniors prior to Friday's contest versus Catawba. First-serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Abney Center.
