GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - Freshman Denzail Jones dropped in a driving
layup with nine seconds remaining in overtime as the Anderson men's
basketball team rallied for a 70-69 win past Clayton State Saturday
afternoon in the South Atlantic Conference/Peach Belt Conference
Classic hosted by Tusculum College at Pioneer Arena.
With 39 seconds remaining in overtime AU misfired on
back-to-back shots, but senior guard Kevis Cornwell grabbed the
rebound and following a timeout by Anderson head coach Jason
Taylor, Jones recorded the game-winning basket. The Lakers' Timmy
Downs tossed up a three-point attempt at the buzzer that bounced
off the rim and AU earned its first win of the young season.
Less than 24 hours after suffering a narrow setback to
three-time defending regional champion Augusta State, Anderson
evened its record at 1-1, while Clayton State dropped to 1-1 after
defeating host Tusculum on Friday.
The extra period was tied twice before Jones' second trey of the
afternoon snapped a 65-65 tie with 2:34 on the clock, but the
Lakers scored four unanswered points to take a brief one-point edge
with just less than a minute remaining, setting up the frantic
final moments.
Jones scored five points in the final 1:10 of regulation as the
Trojans rallied to send the game into overtime. Trailing 60-57,
Jones connected for his only 3-pointer of the afternoon to that
point to knot the contest for the ninth time and following a miss
from beyond the arc by CLSU's Brandon Robinson, Jones sank two free
throws to put the Trojans up by a deuce.
On the other end, Robinson collected Downs' miss, drew the foul
and hit two free throws with 26 seconds on the clock. The Trojans
turned the ball over before getting off an attempt in the final
seconds of regulation.
The first-ever meeting between the Lakers and Trojans was a
memorable one, featuring 10 ties and 16 lead changes with neither
team able to build more than a five point advantage.
Senior forward Trey Britton scored a team-high 19 points and
narrowly missed a double-double, collecting eight rebounds. Jones
added 13 points, while senior guard Brandon Young chipped in 13.
Cornwell recorded nine points and handed out a team-best five
assists on the afternoon. Junior Taylor Shugart shared team-high
rebounds with eight.
CLSU's Robinson netted a game-high 30 points, with Downs
contributing 21 points and six assists.
Next up for the Trojans is a visit to Division I South Carolina
State on Tuesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in
Orangeburg.
