SALISBURY, N.C. - Paced by senior Jamie Lancaster's
double-double, the Anderson volleyball team outlasted Catawba
College, 3-2, (20-25, 25-19, 25-21, 16-25, 15-11) in South Atlantic
Conference action Friday night at Goodman Gym.
Anderson (11-6, 5-3 SAC) snapped a two-match skid with the win
en route to evening its road record at 3-3, while Catawba fell to
7-9 overall and 2-6 in league play.
The back-and-forth battle saw the Trojans commit several errors
in dropping the first set, but recover to claim two straight. The
two teams traded wins in the fourth and fifth frames.
AU led just once early in the opening set at 3-2, but the
Indians took advantage of miscues by the Trojans to score five of
the next six points and pushed out to a 7-4 lead.
Anderson stayed close, with Catawba unable to build more than a
three-point cushion, and the Trojans reeled off three straight
points midway through the frame to knot the score at 16 apiece. But
the Indians answered with a 5-2 run of their own, taking a lead
they would not relinquish. AU climbed within 21-20, but could not
get any closer as Catawba notched the final four points of the set
for the win.
Down a set and trailing, 8-4, in the second stanza, it was
Anderson's turn to take advantages of Catawba errors, scoring four
unanswered points and forcing a timeout by the Indians. A kill by
freshman Tori Calhoon off an assist from Lindsay Doggett gave the
Trojans a 10-9 edge and AU went on to build a 16-10 lead behind the
strong serving of freshman Chelsea Olson, before CC called another
timeout and regrouped to score five of the next six points to pull
within 17-15.
The Trojans put the set out of reach behind a 6-2 run and went
on to claim the win.
Anderson claimed the third frame with senior Adria Mullaney
serving and AU gaining an 11-6 lead midway through the frame. The
Trojans led by as many as six and held off a late Catawba charge to
hold onto the win and go ahead by a set.
The Trojans fell behind early in the fourth set and could not
recover, with Catawba evening the match at two sets apiece.
The fifth set was one of runs by each team, as AU raced out to a
quick 7-0 lead with Katelyn Kraft serving, then the Indians
answered with a 6-1 run to pull within two. Anderson still held the
two-point edge, 11-9, when Calhoon and Lancaster combined to score
the final four points of the match.
Lancaster recorded a match-high 27 kills and added 22 digs,
sharing team honors with Marlie Bryant, who also garnered 22 digs
on the night. Calhoon notched 14 kills, while Olson finished with
10 kills and three aces. The AU defense stepped up, with five
players collecting double-figure digs, as Mullaney garnered 14,
Doggett added 12 digs and Meagan Murray recorded 11.
Anderson will get back on the court Saturday, closing out its
four-match road swing with two matches at Wingate versus the
league-leading Bulldogs and Peach Belt-foe Montevallo. First-serve
is slated for noon.
