Trojans Stumble at Mars Hill

Box score

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Anderson volleyball team struggled on the offensive side, notching the second-lowest attack percentage of the season and opened a two-match road swing with a 3-0 (20-25, 17-25, 19-25) setback to Mars Hill College in South Atlantic Conference action at Stanford Arena.

Anderson, which earned a No. 8 ranking in the Southeast Region earlier this week, dropped to 17-11 overall and 8-7 in the league, while Mars Hill (9-11, 5-11 SAC) collected the win after dropping four straight road matches.

With both teams battling for position in league standings as the regular season enters its final week, the Lions avenged an earlier five-set loss to the Trojans and snapped AU's two-match win streak.

The Lions snapped a 5-5 tie in the first set with a 7-1 run and the Trojans were unable to get any closer than four the rest of the way.

Anderson fell behind 10-3 in the second frame and inched back to within three, at 17-14, but MHC answered with four straight points to put the set out of reach.

The Trojans began slowly in the third set, but again rallied to within 19-16 before Mars Hill notched the set with a 6-3 run.

Freshman Tori Calhoon led the Trojan attack with 11 kills, with senior Lindsay Doggett handing out 23 assists and senior Adria Mullaney collecting a team-high 18 digs. Senior Jamie Lancaster and junior Meagan Murray each added 14 digs on the night.

Anderson wraps up its road schedule with a noon match at Tusculum on Saturday.
