ANDERSON, S.C. - A balanced offensive effort lifted the Anderson
volleyball team past Lenoir-Rhyne, 3-1 (25-16, 15-25, 25-12, 26-24)
in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Shuford
Gymnasium.
Anderson improved to 14-8 overall and 8-4 in league play with
its third consecutive win, while sweeping the season series with
the Bears.
Lenoir-Rhyne fell to 8-11 overall and 5-9 in the conference,
having dropped its last two contests and four of its last five.
The Trojans claimed the first set on the strength of their .439
hitting percentage as a team, jumping out to a 10-1 lead with
freshman Chelsea Olson and senior Lindsay Doggett serving. AU led
by as many as 10 en route to the win, with Lancaster knocking down
seven kills and Marlie Bryant recording four.
Anderson stumbled in the second set as the Bears staked an early
4-1 advantage. The Trojans rallied to within 12-10, only to see
Lenoir-Rhyne push back out to a 10-point cushion with an 11-3 run
as the home team took the win.
AU responded by jumping out to an 8-4 lead in the third frame,
again posting a hot attack percentage (.355), with freshman Tori
Calhoon recording four kills and Bryant adding three in the effort.
The Trojans never trailed in the set and senior Adria Mullaney
served for the final eight points.
The fourth and final set was tied 12 times before the Trojans
pulled out the win. Anderson broke a 14-14 tie with a 7-2 outburst
before the Bears inched back to knot the score again at 22 apiece.
With the score tied at 2s4-24, Lancaster collected a kill and AU
claimed the win on an error by L-R.
Lancaster notched a match-high 20 kills behind a hot-hitting
.432 attack percentage on the afternoon, while Bryant and Calhoon
each added nine kills. Doggett continued to add to her
school-record assist tally, garnering 38. Mullaney led AU's
defensive effort with 23 digs.
Anderson closes out its three-match road swing with a
non-conference tilt at Augusta State on Wednesday, with first-serve
slated for 7 p.m.
