Anderson Sweeps Newberry in Conference Action

ANDERSON, S.C. - Paced by its trio of seniors, the Anderson volleyball team blanked visiting Newberry, 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 26-24) in South Atlantic Conference action Tuesday night at the Abney Athletic Center.

In a thrilling match that was just as close as the scores indicated, Anderson (12-8, 6-4 SAC) began the second half of its conference slate by claiming the season series with the Wolves and extending NC's losing skid to five matches. The Trojans also knocked off Newberry (10-10, 3-7 SAC), 3-1, in early September.

The opening set featured seven ties, with AU falling behind 8-4 early before rallying to knot the score at eight apiece. Freshman Tori Calhoon notched a kill and senior Adria Mullaney ripped an ace to give the Trojans a slim two-point edge. Newberry answered with two consecutive points of its own before AU reeled off three straight, including two kills from Calhoon.

Anderson was unable to build more than a two-point cushion the rest of the way, with the Wolves again tying the score at 16-16. But each time Newberry evened the score, AU answered and with the score even at 23-23, senior Jamie Lancaster notched a kill and sophomore Tiffany Rowe closed the set with one of her two solo blocks on the night.

Neither team was able to build more than a two-point lead in a second set that saw 20 ties. Newberry gained the slim early edge, but AU pushed back and the two teams battled on even terms the rest of the way. With the score again tied at 23 apiece, senior setter Lindsay Doggett again looked for Lancaster, who notched one of her match-high 19 kills and AU claimed the win on an error by Newberry.

The Wolves jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in the third frame and led by two on six occasions, the last time at 23-21, but AU called a timeout and rallied to even the score at 24, before Lancaster recorded back-to-back kills for the win.

Doggett handed out a match-high 42 assists and 13 digs, while three other Trojans collected double-digit digs, led by Lancaster's 17. Marlie Bryant added 14 digs, while senior Adria Mullaney recorded 12. Freshman Chelsea Olson added four total blocks on the night and Calhoon notched seven kills.

Anderson opens a three-match road swing at league-opponent Brevard on Friday, with first-serve slated for 6:30 p.m. at Boshamer Gymnasium.
