GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Despite having three players reach double
figures, the Anderson women's basketball team wrapped up its brief
two-game Conference Carolinas road swing with its first conference
setback, 70-64, to Limestone Wednesday night at Timken Gym. The
loss snapped the Trojans' three-game win streak and dropped
Anderson to 6-5 overall and 5-1 in the conference, while Limestone
won its second straight contest, improving to 5-6 and evening its
conference record at 3-3. The game featured eight ties and six lead
changes in the opening 10 minutes of action, wit neither team able
to gain more than a three-point lead until Lady Saints' guard Maria
Young scored at the 8:45 mark to give LC a 26-21 cushion. Limestone
went on to claim a 10-point lead three times in the opening frame
before the score settled at 42-35 at the half. The Trojans refused
to go away and came out of the break on an 11-4 run fueled by
scoring efforts from four different players. AU knotted the score
for the ninth and final time of the night on a basket by freshman
guard Alissa Diaz, but Anderson could not gain the lead as
Limestone's Brittany Miller gave the Lady Saints a lead they would
not surrender, 48-46, with 12:26 remaining in the game. After
trailing by eight with less than five minutes to go, Anderson
rallied yet again and climbed to within 66-62 on freshman Breonda
Shannon's second basket of the night with exactly 3:00 on the
clock. Young answered on the other end with a pair of free throws
and AU was unable to score again until Korie Sellers dropped in a
basket inside the final 30 seconds. "We were not focused and ready
to play tonight," Anderson head coach Jim Brunelli said. "But we
had some great individual performances and we will not let this
loss define the season for us." Limestone held a slim 33-31 edge on
the boards and the Trojans forced 14 turnovers, but committed 17
miscues of their own. Senior guard Shanice Wilson led the way for
Anderson, scoring a team-high 17 points and collecting a team-best
six rebounds. Freshman Maci Siniard added 14 points and pulled down
14 boards, while junior guard Ashley Abed netted 12 points on
5-of-6 shooting from the field. Anderson comes back to the Abney
Athletic Center when the Trojans play host to conference-foe St.
Andrews on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off versus the Lady Knights is
slated for 2 p.m. in the women's-men's doubleheader. Game
