Top-Seeded Lees-McRae Holds off Trojans

Banner Elk, N.C. -- Behind a hot-hitting percentage, top-seeded Lees-McRae outpaced fourth-seeded Anderson, 3-0, (25-13, 25-12, 25-19) in semifinal action of the Conference Carolinas volleyball tournament Friday night at Williams Gymnasium. With the win, Lees-McRae improved to 28-5 on the season, including 16-3 in the friendly confines of Williams Gymnasium, while Anderson wrapped up its season at 22-13 overall. The Lady Bobcats move on to host No. 2 seed Pfeiffer, a 3-2 winner past third-seeded Limestone, for the tournament title on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Trojans fell behind, 8-0, in the opening set and were not able to recover, as Lees-McRae posted the 25-13 first set win on the strength of a staggering .448 hitting percentage. The second set was similar, as the Lady Bobcats again pushed out to a quick 11-2 advantage. AU trimmed the deficit to six, at 15-9, but that was as close as the Trojans would get with Lees-McRae again used a strong attack, collecting 13 kills against just two errors in 25 attempts. The third set started with Anderson falling behind, 5-1, but the Trojans closed the gap to 12-9 on a Lees-McRae service error. But the AU rally fell just short, as back-to-back kills pushed the Lady Bobcats lead to 14-9 and they went on to secure the three-set win, 25-19. Anderson's Jamie Lancaster shared match-high honors with 13 kills and Adria Mullaney followed with seven kills and a team-high eight digs and two block assists. Lindsay Doggett handed out 20 assists.
