Trojans Defeat North Greenville on Senior Night

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Behind the effort of a handful of seniors on Senior Night, the Anderson women's soccer team was able to defeat North Greenville 2-1 in a thrilling finish on Monday night at the AU Soccer Field. The Trojans had some early chances but were unable to convert. Freshman Adrienne Lough had the best early look as she broke free 13 minutes in, but her shot sailed just inches high of the crossbar. The Crusaders from North Greenville took advantage of the Trojans' missed opportunities, and were able to get on the board first when junior Leah Ward made a great individual play and was able to put one past senior Trojan goal keeper Kelli Whitfield. The Trojans had another great look at the 60 minute mark, however Crusader goal keeper Jessica Binkley was able to block a great attempt from Trojan freshman Ashley Cotton. However, on Senior Night it was senior forward Jen Shideler who provided the equalizer with just five minutes to play in as she knocked in a pass from Jessica Kleinberg. It was Shideler's first career goal. Jessica Kleinberg would follow that up with a goal of her own just two minutes later as she provided the game-winner off an assist from senior Larissa Federowich. Senior goalkeepers Kelli Whitfield and Alyssa Stephens combined for the win in goal for the Trojans. "That is exactly what you want on Senior Night," said Trojans head coach Jason Dowiak. "Jen provided the equalizer, on the first goal of her career. Larissa Federowich had the game-winning assist. Kelli Whitfield had a major save in the first half to prevent a goal, and Alyssa Stephens played very aggressively off her line." The win keeps the Trojans' five-game winning streak alive. "That game was the story of our team," Dowiak said. "We've been down before, but we've never given up and have kept fighting. The girls gave a great effort tonight." The Trojans even their overall record at 8-8. North Greenville drops to 7-4-1 on the season. With just two conference matches left in the season, fourth-place Anderson will get back on the pitch Wednesday, when the Trojans visit seventh-place Limestone as the two teams battle for seeding in the conference tournament. Kick-off in Gaffney is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Saints Field. Game Stats Season Stats
