HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- Freshman Ashley Cotton tallied seven points
as the Anderson Trojans spoiled the Coker Lady Cobras senior day
with a 6-1 victory in Conference Carolinas women's soccer action on
Saturday afternoon. Cotton had a hat trick, while adding an assist
in the victory, improving the Trojans to 7-8 overall, and 6-3 in
the conference. The loss drops Coker to 0-15 on the year and 0-10
in the conference. With the win, Anderson has claimed four straight
victories in the last eight days. Fellow freshman Carrie Settle was
the first Trojan to strike, scoring a goal in the fourth minute of
the game with an assist from Cotton. Cotton scored her first two
goals of the match over the next 25 minutes, with assists from
Settle and Jessica Kleinberg on the second goal. Junior Katleyn
Conover finished off the first half with an unassisted goal to make
it 4-0 at intermission. In the second half, Cotton completed her
hat trick with an assist from Tori Danielson for a breakaway goal.
Then in the 61st minute, Coker's Kerrie Cribb notched her first
goal of the year with an assist from Jill Giguere. AU's Joelle
Purinton added the final goal of the match with just 30 seconds
remaining to give Anderson the 6-1 victory. Anderson's Alyssa
Stephens had seven saves between the pipes, while Coker goalkeeper
Carrie Hudnell recorded nine saves. "We had a really strong effort
from everyone offensively," said Anderson head coach Jason Dowiak.
"Both Kelli [Whitfield] and Alyssa.[Stephens] played well in goal.
We had a chance to rest some people and all-in-all it was a good
day." Anderson will get back on the pitch Monday, as the Trojans
celebrate Senior Day by playing host to North Greenville in a
non-conference matchup. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the AU
Soccer Field.
