ANDERSON, S.C. -- Freshman Jessica Kleinberg's two-goal effort
lifted the Anderson women's soccer team past St. Andrews, 2-1, in
Conference Carolinas action Saturday afternoon at the AU Soccer
Field. Playing for the first time in 10 days in a steady drizzle,
the Trojans controlled the tempo of the contest, forcing much of
the action to take place on the Knight's end of the pitch and
outshooting the visitors 13-3 on the afternoon. "I thought we
controlled much of the game," said Anderson head coach Jason
Dowiak. "Jessica really stepped up with her two goals and I thought
Tori [Danielson] controlled the back and Larissa [Fedorowich]
controlled the middle for us." AU threatened early with freshman
Joelle Purinton notching one of her four shots on the afternoon
just three minutes into the contest. The Trojans again nearly
scored at the 18:49 mark when fellow freshman Carrie Settle's
attempt rolled just wide of the post following Kleinberg's long
dribble down the right side of the pitch. Anderson's persistent
pressure finally paid off when Kleinberg broke free and her shot
found the back of the net, as the Hamilton, Ohio native recorded
her sixth goal of the season. The teams went to intermission with
AU holding the 1-0 advantage. Kleinberg posted her second
game-winning score of the 2009 campaign in the 66th minute when she
again broke free, dribbled down the middle of the pitch and rifled
a shot past the St. Andrews keeper. The Knights made the final four
minutes of the Homecoming contest close, as sophomore Krystal
Hedderman's shot settled in the net and cut the AU lead to 2-1, but
it proved to be as close as the visitors would get. The AU offense
forced St. Andrews' keeper Becca Knott to make six saves and
recorded eight shots on goal. Anderson senior keeper Kelli
Whitfield played 90 minutes between the pipes and picked up her
fourth win. Anderson moved to 4-8 overall and 4-3 in league play,
while St. Andrews fell to 7-6, including a 4-3 mark in the
conference. The Trojans will get back on the pitch Tuesday when AU
visits Mars Hill for a non-conference tilt slated for 7 p.m. Game
