Trojans Fall to No. 3-Seed Carson-Newman in Tournament Opener

HICKORY, N.C. – Anderson University Softball (36-12, 17-5 SAC) suffered their first loss of the South Atlantic Conference Championship Series on Thursday evening, falling to No. 3-seed Carson-Newman (40-10, 16-6 SAC) in a 2-5.

After a scoreless six innings, the Eagles put up two runs off a single to take the lead. The Trojans responded with a single to center field by senior Lauren Brakovec (Farragut, Tenn.), bringing in two runs to even the score. Entering the top of the seventh knotted at 2-2, the game shifted momentum in Carson-Newman's favor with a double and two singles for three Eagles to score. Anderson attempted to answer in the final minutes but came up empty.

Brakovec led the Trojans at bat during the game, bringing in the only two runs by the Black and Gold. In the field, the Farragut native recorded 11 putouts and no errors for a perfect 1.00 fielding percentage on the day.

In the circle, senior Carson Hobbs (Nicholson, Ga.) recorded three strikeouts in the first five innings. Sophomore Caroline Morgan (Silver Creek, Ga.) made an appearance for a single inning before freshman Kora Kilgore (Smithville, Tenn.) closed the game for the Black and Gold late in the seventh.

Anderson will face the No. 1-seed and host Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday, May 8 in an elimination matchup. The game is slated for 1 p.m. in Hickory, N.C.
