ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson University softball team extended
its win streak to 12 games by sweeping St. Augustine's, 9-1 and
8-0, in nonconference action, Sunday afternoon at the AU Softball
Complex.
Anderson improved to 15-3 on the season, while St. Augustine's
is searching for its first win of the season after falling to
0-8.
Game #1
Anderson 9, St. Augustine's 1 (5 innings)
Junior Courtney Czentnar clubbed a third-inning grand slam in the
opener, while sophomore Cailah Niles was 2-for-2 with a home run, a
bases-loaded walk and an RBI-single. Fellow sophomore Carli Hurtado
was 1-for-2 with a single and also reached on a walk and crossed
the plate twice.
Junior Augie Pena improved to 6-1 on the season by limiting the
Falcons to one hit and one unearned run over five innings of work.
The right-hander fanned 11 batters and walked just one, with just
two runners reaching scoring position.
After jumping ahead 1-0 on Niles' two-out home run in the first
inning, the Trojans sent 10 batters to the plate in the third
inning while scoring five times and giving Pena more than enough
run support.
The Falcons posted their lone run of the afternoon in the top of
the fourth inning, but AU countered with two runs in the bottom of
the inning and added another run in the fifth inning to set the
final score.
Game #2
Anderson 8, St. Augustine's 0 (5 innings)
Senior Molly Child was a perfect 3-for-3 in the nightcap, while
scoring three times and driving in a pair of runs. She also reached
on a walk in the fifth inning. Hurtado was 3-for-4 with a pair of
singles and an RBI-double and scored twice, with freshman Kasey
Grant adding a walk and a single.
Junior Lauren Rudesheim (7-2) struck out four and did not walk a
batter, while allowing just three singles over five innings of
work.
Czentnar's two-out triple in the bottom of the first inning
plated Child with the game's first run, while Child's two-run
single with two outs highlighted a four-run second inning for the
Trojans, as they built a 5-0 advantage. Niles' fifth double of the
season in the fourth inning plated Child with AU's sixth run and AU
capitalized on Falcons' miscues to reach the eight-run rule in the
bottom of the fifth frame.
Anderson continues its homestand on Wednesday, when the Trojans
welcome Young Harris to the Electric City for a 3 p.m.
twinbill.
